My son was noticing some vibration in the steering wheel, probably coming from the steer tires. We jacked up one side then the other, and checked the tires for "roundness". The tire on the drivers side is a bit "out of round", so I imagine that is the culprit. Anyway, it has Firestone on it now, they were on it when we bought the truck last year. My son is doing some commercial grain hauling, as well as up and down our country roads we live on. Even the local blacktops we run on are kind of rough and bumpy, so he kind of lives on not the best of roads. Any recommendations on tread type or brand we should be looking at to replace our steer tires?
    thanks,

I am having a similar issue, but only at road speeds right around 60mph. I'm fine at 55mph and below; I'm also find at 65mph and above. And I also have Firestone steer tires.

I had thought it was simply a balancing problem, perhaps some of those lead weights missing off the wheel. Could there be something more going on? My steer tires came with the truck but were brand new at the time, so changing them out seems premature.

There are all kind of things that will cause steers to bounce. I bought a truck that kept eating up driver side steers and I replace the wheel bearing it had a little play in it and that didnt help in the end I replaced both shocks 2 new steer tires "cooper" and a 3 axel alignment and problem solved. The rears were 1/2 inch out of square with the truck pushing the steers and ruining the tire. If It just started bouncing and your tires are in good shape I would have them rebalanced and that will give u a idea of whats going on. Oh yea the first sigh of the problems were that driver steer tire wouldnt stay in balance. Balance it, a month later bounce then it finally ruined the tire. The coopers have been a good tire so far but they havent been on long enough for me to give a true opinion on them yet. I can tell you that bf goodrich are good steers if u can find them. I had a set and was very impressed with them but they are hard to find around here.

Michelin XGreen's... and I have a rule. New steers dont get installed without new shocks.

We put some centramatics on last week, and they helped a bit, but the drivers side tire being slightly out of round, is still causing the problems. Do you guys recommend replacing the tires in sets, or could I get by with just replacing the one that is out of round? Also, "Keith" any recommendations on shocks? I might look mine over and see how they are, could need replaced.
    thanks,

Centramatics are good. Now see if you can find a tire dealer that will shave the high spots off the right tire. Also stated above, the problem can start from rear. Get a three axle alignment, and new front axle shocks. Good luck.

The centramatics are great for new tires, will add lots of miles onto the tires life, but it will not save a damaged tire.

Gabriel are good shocks from my experience and monroes are too. I have replaced just one steer if the other one is in good shape I try to locate a used one taht will match it pretty close but a tire in good enough shape is hard to come by and they usually want 150-$200 for one in that good of shape I paid $275 a piece for the coopers new. You could have a broke cord in the tire I had that happen more then once. I also had a chinese steer that came on a truck that was 4lbs out of balance. I would be figuring out what is causing the problem before I droped the cash on new steers.A brake drum out of balance will cause the problem too. Like stated above if u have problems and get new steers go ahead and get the shocks and alignment at the same time they can find alot of problems in a alignment. Most good tire guys can look at the tire and give u a idea of whats going on.

Anything "particular" with these shocks? Can they be purchased a Napa instead of a Pete or Kenworth dealership?
