As said, unplugging it will just lead to further issues with unassigned miles and odometer jumps.

Note that "using the phone" to do ELD is only one way, but not the only way. Some drivers or companies do not like that method because of connection issues at times. There are also dedicated all-in-one hard wired ELD's as well. (Omnitracs/Qualcomm, PeopleNet, VDO Roadlog, etc.)

The painless way would be to create 2 driver accounts on the ELD. The short-haul driver will not affect the long haul driver's hours and vice versa. Set the short haul guy as not needing to comply with the 8/11/14/70 long-haul ELD rules (ELD exempt.) Have them log in and out when they each have the truck.

Or, do a time-card only for the short-haul guy and have the long-haul guy log OUT when he is off. In this manner someone would still have to goo in every week and assign all of the short miles to a local driver account created for this purpose.

I'm willing to deal with it as long as I'm driving someone else's truck. But the day I get my own truck, it's gonna be sans-ELD. I don't care if I have to build a glider myself; I'll find a way to have an ELD-proof truck
