Ifta/irp audit

Gotta more to this story Joe.....He probably Never paid his quartely filings for a year or two,Combined with 5 trucks....a 5k fine in your own home without being recklessly rude and telling him to "Get out of my house" means deep down inside..He OWED that money and tried to get away with it.

No ones coming to your office/home and demand 5 large without good reason..And I mean a GOOD reason.

 

I worked for him at the time...paid me on 1099; one of his truck occupied by me. We went together long way. The company he leased on under were one of those Elk Grove Village types. I guess, he was not good at record keeping, he thought that the IRP was on the carrier...not him, but the plates were his. I don't know what triggered that audit..maybe too much daring with under reporting, maybe the very carrier was under the radar too. After all what can they prove with paper logs and no odometer readings?
Also, what is interesting here is that they dug deep ... not last 12 months but reports 3 years old. His first citation too. So, they were set to prey on him. Anyways, what followed we all had to do the odometer reading on each IFTA report (the same ones IRP wanted) ever since.

 

On the serious note, own authority is not exactly for people shy of paperwork. You gotta love paperwork...Every Joe wants to pick his own freight though.

Q2. How many supporting documents must be retained by motor carriers, and when must drivers submit them to the motor carrier?

A2. Motor carriers must retain up to eight supporting documents for every 24-hour period that a driver is on duty. Drivers must submit their records of duty status (RODS) and supporting documents to the
motor carrier no later than 13 days after receiving them. If a motor carrier retains more than 8 supporting documents, the motor carrier must maintain the first and last document generated during the regular course of business

and the list goes on.

 

And all that crap in order to be on a Walmart driver salary at best at the end of the day. Amazing.

 

To the O/P, this is not the end of the world. IFTA requires each state to audit a certain percentage of IFTA accounts. At first they ask for 2 months worth of records, if they are satisfied, they will complete the audit with just those 2 months. If they are not satisfied they will ask for more, they can go back 4 years, yes you must keep IFTA records and all supporting documents for 4 years. They will tell you what year and what months they are looking for. Give them what they want, if they ask for something you don't have just tell them you are new and are overwhelmed by all this. Be honest with them, don't try to outsmart them, they have seen it all.

 

IRP just did me 2 months ago and requested logs. So maybe they treat you different than me. They picked a quarter and had me email mileage recording and logs for that quarter. I haven't heard a thing since. I've never been audited by IFTA.

 

Just got hit with ifta/irp audit. What is the max penalty/fine/interest if I give them zero documents and just pay them AGAIN to leave me alone?
