For the most part that's true but there are cases where you can be compliant with US HOS and not Canadian.

Last 14 days of logs required, 24 consecutive hours off sometime in the last 14 days regardless of hours worked, 36 hours for a reset-34 isn't enough and the day concept. You can't drive more than 13 hours in one day (unless using the deferral or north of 60) where as you technically can in the US.

Get software that allows you to switch from US to Canada HOS ... I have it loaded on my laptop and it saves me loads of time. Plus it helps me keep my books straight ... worth every penny ($50).

ChipnChair, is it DDL you're referring to and if so does it have any problems with switching part way through the day?

What does a driver need to cross the border? I know a passport will do but also think there is another document that speeds thing up. Where do you get this?

    Any help is appreciated.

    To the Op

I am Canadian and run 90% in the US and to put it simply here are the rules i follow.

    -70 hrs in 7 days

    -every reset is 36 hours

-I rarely run 14 consecutive days, but you are required a 24 hour period off which will not reset your hours but will allow you to drop whatever hours you have to drop for another 14 days.

-10 hour off duty/sleeper break prior to entering the US

-if you start your day in the US you can finish under CAN rules as long as none of your day in the US exceeds the rules...

IE:drive 9 hours in USA and cross the border you can still drive to a maximum of 13 hours in a 16 hour window, with only 8 hours off duty/sleeper required as long as you dont return to the US the next day.

P.S.there are plenty of companies that have shipping lanes to Canada, research them all and know what you are in for by signing on with them....

You can get a FAST Card which was supposed to speed things up, but there are only certain ports which have FAST Lanes...

However to use these lanes the load must be FAST certified, the company must be FAST certified, and you must be FAST certified...

As far as I am concerned it was more hassle then it was worth!

I've heard a lot about a program called Canada gold where drivers get more to drive into Canada with SWIFT.. I know some SWIFT van drivers go to Canada but I don't think it's a dedicated situation....if a Canada load pops up the SWIFT driver has to be qualified.

Many of the Canada loads are dropped at the border...you may want to call the SWIFT terminal in Washington and find out...I think that's where much of the Canada stuff is dispatched. Hope it helps...also...running a dedicated route with Swift usually only comes with time a new driver won't get it.

WHAT?! WHY?! to hell with those french-canadian bastids! i haaaaaaaated going in or around montreal. i very much prefer toronto, london, edmonton, calgary, and the vancouver areas. i took 4 days off in the toronto area during my first year with swift. i have some friends in the area and we all sought out the infamous toronto zanta. all i can say is that he lives up to his name. zanta was a freaking trip! :biggrin_2559:
