The moral of the story is to always look WAY ahead and be constantly assessing threats.
I'd have likely been doing 55ish one that clear #2 lane as well but IMO his reaction time was lacking.

No contact, and he did a great job.
I wasn't there... and it wasn't me... so it's really not too fair to judge with theoretical facts.

Not saying he didnt do a good job at avoiding the wreck. Simply saying its much better to be hitting the breaks than it is to swerve like that still going 50 to 60. He couldve easily backed it down to 40 or lower without braking to hard and avoided a dangerous swerve onto snow n ice. If u worried about steel beams cutting loose after braking moderatly u need to throw some more securement on it. It just seems these dashcam videos the driver never get slowed until last second is all im saying. We can agreee to disagree the driver is safe and thats all that matters

 

I would have been on the brakes yesterday, avoid all that unnecessary and particularly unwelcome swerving. Cable truck is on his own really. See how far those wires came off the posts in both directions? Thats why we stopped using them back in the 70's in the mountains. Vehicles go over anyway.

We had some cable here on 67 and they did keep vehicles of all sizes from going across into oncoming freeway.

What gets me is the excessive speed even though the stretch isrelatively straight and flat or nearly so. Its Wyoming after all.

But I was never there so just giving a opinion from previous experience in bad weather what I would have been doing. Anything is possible when there is enough of something to make big rigs slide. Sometimes they brought that situation on themselves. Not the time or place to be rolling coal. dispatch can darn well wait a bit.

 

I think he did pretty good. When he started slowing down may have been when he first saw what was happening. I think it's funny how most are criticizing the driver he avoided the accident without having to hit the ditch. It's hard to say how you are going to react to a situation until it's YOU in that situation.

 

Nail the brakes that hard in a smooth bore tanker and he wouldn’t have had the time to swerve and no that swerve wouldn’t have upset a tanker but braking hard nuff to slow 20mph in a few seconds sure would have caused a huge wave to nail the head of the trailer really good not to mention take all the weight off the trailer axles and lock the brakes causing the trailer to slide.

 

Just wondering and want to learn, in this situation wouldn’t it be wise to hit jakes and light press brakes to slow down once you see a jack knife? I know in that condition I’m only driving 45mph or maybe 50 if I feel daring but that’s as fast as I would go.
