A K9 alert to a vehicle = probable cause = search without consent or warrant for whatever the trained K9 alerted for....

 

You are 100% correct; however, the end result is what? exactly....

Subject gets stopped at 1 am, at that hour the cop is "fishing" for DUI's, so the cop lies and says the reason for the traffic stop is, "you hit the white line." Subject fails the sobriety test and is subsequently arrested. Only one problem though, fruit from the poison tree taints the initial stop from the get go, but guess what, prove it in court that the cop lied, good luck.

So, you're right, it happens more often then most people think... In some peoples minds though the end really does justify the means, until it's them sitting in front of the bubblegum machine.

It comes down to ones integrity. Ask yourself, if a cop is able to lie about the reason for an initial traffic stop, what else is he willing to lie about.

I, like you, support the blue 100%, but do it legally boys.....
