Best to learn shifting, you never know when you will need that skill and yes for a newbee it's a skill you will need in the future.

Since wants2bsafe has only made 3 posts in this forum, one on January 16, 2009, and two on January 20, 2009, I doubt if we'll ever hear from this person.

Like most jobs you have to work your way up. Here are a few tips...

    1. Your driver manager is either your best friend your or worst enemy, he gives you your loads, so I would not piss him off! Doing so will land you in New York City (Brooklyn) with a 9am pick up. Trust me you don't want it.

    2. Send your times in every morning.

    3. KEEP YOUR LOG CURRENT. A log violation will land you in Tontitown for a week while they audit you logs. If the truck aint movin you aint getting paid.

    4. DO NOT...REPEAT...DO NOT go on the Tontitown yard unless instructed to do so. Once in you have to clear departments to get back out...read this as loosing 2 days drive time. If you have to go to TT, park on the corner lot...ur trainer will show you.

    5. C-1 is going to teach you exactly what you need to know to pass the CDL test...ONCE IN THE TRUCK LISTEN TO YOUR TRAINER EVEN IF HE TELLS YOU TO GO AGAINST WHAT YOU LEARNED IN SCHOOL... He has been in the real world and know what works and what doesnt.

    6. Prepass is tracked by the states...drive to long or to far and you WILL get a red light. If you stay legal, after a while you get a rep and will carry 90% green. If you get a truck driven by a book jockey, your going to have reds a lot for several months. The rep is tied to the truck not the driver.

    7. Personal item. Truck stop food is expensive, esp if you have a family to send money home to. Get a 12V 12 can cooler at Walmart or Target and a 450 watt inverter, larger and you will blow the 15 amp fuse in the panel behind the driver seat in the freightshakers. The first will keep your drinks and a few food items cold, the second will run a small tv or a SMALL (ie 4 cup) crock pot. bungie the top and set it where it won't tip, and dinner is ready when you stop at the end of the day, be it soup or some meatballs with bbq sauce.

    8. Expect some crappy runs till your DM develops some trust in your driving. It will take some time to pull CA runs, then only if your in the right place at the right time.

You want to know more let me know

Honestly I cant complain, I have gotten plenty of miles. the only issue I have had is the way they jam you out of hime time. I have had to fight with them for the last 3 scheduled home times and when I got there I was under a load so I got very little time at the house. I have an empty now and I am going to take advantage of that fact.
