Hi funk thanks for the input. I am having a little trouble picturing your idea but I think I see what you mean. Problem with that set-up is you'd need an engineering degree to figure out all the geometry. I'm trying to make this as user friendly and as "mechanically challenged" easy as possible. Keep posting ideas please.

Good idea, i myself looked into apu's just to learn more about them and i was amazed at how much they costs

the low voltage sensor units are available. problem is they are very cost prohibitive at this time.

First off I am not a Truck Driver, I am a RV owner. Yes, I am expecting a bit of harassment. I was starting to search this site looking for ways to squeeze a few more MPG out of the CAT in my RV when I found this thread.
I too am looking to replace my direct drive fan with and electric unit. While looking I found a 12 / 24 volt DC fan that flows 10,000 CFM and is said to be good for truck with up to 450 HP and under 100,000 pounds. Take a look at this site maybe they have what you are looking for.
Electric Fan Engineering
I have often wondered why more trucks don't have a small diesel generator and roof mounted AC with heat strips or Heat pump. I have two 13,500 BTU units and that is all I need to cool a 40' RV. If you tap into the cooling system on the generator you could even supplement your heat of needed. You can even pick them up used at an RV salvage yard to keep the initial cost down.

I would have put the links but since I am new to the Forum I can't post links yet.
Just a bit more food for thought.7mouths2feed Thanks this. -

If cooling is your only concern have you thought about using electric cooling pads ,like in a 12V fridge along with a low speed circulation fan. I don.t know about the effiecency of these units but i would think it should be better than a 12V compressor running the truck system??? and if something goes wrong the truck system is still intacked
And of course lots of extra insulation in the bunk would help the program
It's good to see some one thinking instead of just buying
how about running a second alternator for the APU system again so you have not comprimised the truck's
