That idiot honking his horn was the white Ford pickup squashed by the big rigs trailer.

If you read the accompanying article, you would have read the accident was on the opposite side of the highway, westbound. The big rig that crashed was traveling eastbound. So you don't know if they had flares out or not.

"DPS tells us they initially responded to a two-vehicle crash on US 84, one mile east of Slaton, around 10:45 a.m.
The crash blocked westbound lanes of US 84. While troopers were investigating the crash, a semi traveling eastbound jackknifed and came to final rest in the center median."

And if you look, the big rig has bumper fog lights on, they're closer toward the center of the grille, and lower than the headlights.

    OK.
My point was if you immediately put out flares,
there is no question in everyone's mind there is an emergency situation.

I've already left a scene where I had flares put out in the fog,
and I could still see them in rear view mirror driving away over a half mile away.

I keep a box under my passenger seat and use them liberally.
As I step down out of the cab, and I'm watching for some fool that didn't "slow down - move over"
for a emergency vehicle, I pop the flare I have ready in my hand, and wave everybody over
as I walk back the length of my truck. This starts my internal timer.
I'm outta here in 10 minutes.
Too many guys towing have died for me to not take this all very seriously.
Every second you are on the roadside is an opportunity to look up and see that trailer in video.

The guy jumping in the pick up truck more than likely saved his life. I always tell my son(teaching him to get regular license) always expect something to be around the corner so you will drive accordingly. I'm thankful the loads I do I'm never in a rush to p/u or deliver. To be honest try to drive like that period. I prefer to walk or ride my bike anymore. Drivers are in such rush or just have no common courtesy anymore.
You would think as fragile as our bodies are you would consider that when driving so easily to get broken or killed. I have a few more miles to go before I sleep. Safe travel fellow truckers.

30 year old plain white,no name truck,
30 year old plain white,no name trailer,
    Paper logs,
    Outlaw,
    800 miles a day solo,
    Totally out of control,
This is becoming the norm now.

At least he was nice enough to veer to his right
    At the last second.
Otherwise those 2 parked 4 wheelers would
Have met the same fate as those people in Colorado
    A few months ago.

When another no name company, paper logs,
Old beat up equipment, no training whatsoever
For the driver, killed a bunch of people the
    Exact same way.

because many people did not have cell phones or other portable devices, to get on line, while driving?

so in other words, still being distracted by something in the vehicles, like...eating, putting on make up, yelling at the kids, the dog barking, reading a map or reading the piece of paper with directions?

i think that due to all the news around the world, 24/7, it's actually hard not to see so much more.

back in my days, we only had 3 major tv networks, and news from around the world took about 24 hours the get back to us. now, it's nano seconds, and way to much of it.

these accidents happened with frequency back in the day, but we just never heard of it.
