I have Keep Truckin and it showed key on and key off times, I wonder what it shows on Opti-Idle trucks.

I would treat it as PC (off duty driving). The truck engine is used, but we don’t have to log it as on duty since we are allowed by law to use it. You can log it as off duty “cooking” or off duty “heating/air conditioning.” However, where they may be an issue is how long the engine is idled as I think there are federal and state laws on how long we can idle. Frankly, I believe you can convincingly argue that you needed to idle the truck because it was under 30 degrees or over 90 degrees outside.

If the DOT officer wants to claim that you moved the truck when it was turned on/off, the ELD driver logs will show the distance traveled from status to status, and because you only idled the truck, you’ll be fine.

@TallJoe they’ve said that answering a phone call from dispatch doesn’t interrupt your break. As long as there’s no truck movement I think they’d have a hard argument trying to say starting your engine interrupts it.

Back in 2005 or 2006. I was put OOS for technical issues in Billings, MT...it was 3 am. I slept until the service came at 8 am and they finished the job two hours later at 10 am. I called the service and paid for the service and in the process I got out from the truck to inspect the job was done good. I waited until 11 am to accumulate 8 hours as I was afraid that MT at the time had cameras installed... and moved out from the scale heading West. The next scale was in Butte, MT where I was called inside. The 8 hours in the sleeper was questioned and doubted as something possible to do while the trailer was worked on. I kept saying that I managed to handle the situation from inside the sleeper, which was ridiculous...but I was not going to admit that I left the sleeper even for a moment. The demeanor in which I was asked about leaving the sleeper indicated that the scale DOT guy was not joking either. He let me go in the end with a clean inspection report...but some of these DOT officials would not surprise with accusing me of a false log book due to starting a truck during a rest break.

You should give zero degree sleeping bags a try. Those things are amazing. You won’t feel a thing while sleeping. Also, when you are exposed to cold temps every day, your body will naturally adapt to the cold weather. It’s known as acclimatization. Now you know how locals can be fueling at 0 degrees without their hands or feet hurting. Hahaha.

Yeah..you should have retired as you promised before 2018, because wait another 5-10 years and you'll get to see mandatory speed governors and driver facing cameras.
I am afraid the pre ELD truck won't help here much...lol

Hi Joe,And Happy New Year..Hi LongFLD

You really had to be in Bad shape to be put out of service in Montana.....

So,In 2005 you were on paper, But the fact is, You guys cant be out here "Fearing" all this stuff all the time (Logs,This,That,)......Not a way to represent, Because when you guys let the DOT make you feel like a Slave..It gets easy for them to treat everyone like that.

Its a "Control" Thing...Which you guys need to start standing up. We all Have families and Bills...But you Let these guys Handle you in any way shape or form....We'll Never be Strong.

I Got busted back in the Summer in Vermont for not having last 8 days (im on paper)...I Kicked and Screamed at the Little Red headed DOT girl, But I promised her Id Be Back, Which I am With Some Flowers For Her and Im gonna Spank her little Butt real Good for doing what she did to me.

You are in a vehicle with a heater, if you need to sleep in an outdoor sleeping bag in an effort to save money you need your head examined. All this crap about even having to worry about starting the truck to stay warm being deemed an interruption to your break is ridiculous and exactly why people like me said ELOGS should be fought against.
