Most of the carriers that have shut down have been dry van outfits. Dry van is the most cut throat of all the trailers when it comes to rates, and all these outfits have been in the race to the bottom on both rates and quality of drivers for a couple of decades. Hard to change course after this long, ya know?

Especially when your customers have zero respect for the service you provide, and only see the cost. Dry van carriers have been fighting to shave pennies for as long as I have been driving. All to keep customers who will break contracts (without repercussion, no less) over a two cent per mile savings.

Honestly, I cannot see how Owner Operators make it dragging a dry van. I'll keep my flat deck, thanks.

 

Open deck is just as bad.

 

I honestly haven't seen the level of shutdowns on the flatbed side. Sure, there was Falcon out of Youngstown. But that was blatant mismanagement by the investment firm that owned Falcon at the end and had no further interest in keeping the company solvent.

There ARE flatbed carriers that should have shut down (P&S, Western Express, any number of Chicago-based flatbed carriers), but they all seem to keep trucking on despite everything going on.

 

When dry van is bad, people switch to reefers and flats. You are not immune

 

Very true. But not many want to fight tarps in the winter, so I got that going for me. I do think Reefer is gonna get hit next, though. Expect to see those rates drop due to over-capacity.

Flatbed, on the other hand, has been SCREAMING for COMPETENT drivers for the last few years. These darned rookies are creating chaos out there, and we need some good, solid, experienced hands to come in and do it right.

 

Absolutely, AS LONG AS YOU ARE WORKING DIRECTLY with customers.......The Broker will Never change their profitable ways, ..They would rather work with the Novice and new as opposed to safe,experienced flatbed haulers......

Nucor also has some of the worst crap rates I've ever seen, at least out on the north kentucky mill. I realize that is raw steel coils, but come the #### on! I cannot and will not pay for the "priviledge" of hauling Nucor's coil to the customer!

Nucor runs cheap carriers and novice o/o's cause anyone with more than six months experience knows to avoid them like a leper colony.
