Schneider has something called part time. You pick when you want to work. You have to go out for at least four days twice a month. You do get benefits. It's available in select locations.

Driver staffing companies are the only way I know to work when you want and be off when you want. They usually take a couple dollars per hour off of the company driver pay where they supply drivers. For example, if the company drivers are getting $20/hr, temp drivers get maybe $16-18 per hour and the rest goes to the staffing company.

Even the few companies I've heard of with flexible type of less than full time schedules still expect you to work THAT schedule. I imagine the companies that could afford to give you a Driver's Whim type of schedule would put you in an older, paid for truck.

I’m not sure if you could call it working when you want, but Roehl used to advertise 2 weeks on and 1 week off. And Schneider has or had something similar. I think the problem for a lot of drivers would be moving in and out of different trucks all the time.

 

If you are an OO find a carrier that is not forced dispatch. Simple, One of my old carriers the last I heard was not forced dispatch. Just make some inquiries, you might be surprised!
