I’m posting this because I get tired of everybody always bagging on long hood conventional. I recently acquired a 389 flat top. For the most part I’ll pull a hopper. Looking at maybe tanker and a possibility of pulling a reefer. I agree they aren’t the most aerodynamic truck on the market. So I won’t be on these forums complaining about mileage. I like my truck because the body is mostly aluminum it’s lightweight and I like the narrow cabs. I always thought the 386 would be a good truck but the replacement is a wide cab. I really like the narrow cabs. I like flat tops pulling a hopper it’s pretty practical because a lot of grain elevators are low clearance. This truck is replacing a 2000 Freightliner Classic daycab with a c12 Cat the Pete has an ISX 500 and 72” sleeper it weighs 3,000 lbs more I didn’t think it was that bad. Besides I figure you’re more inclined to take care of it and drive it correctly if you really like your truck. People always get this attitude about other people driving Peterbilts. This is the first really nice truck I’ve owned. My first was an 83 Freightliner in 2005. P.O.S. A.C. Was inoperable drove in the summer until it was cool enough at night to sleep. Not bragging about what I’m doing just didn’t really want to buy a truck until I could buy the one I wanted. Besides that I got tired at looking at trucks that were always old and wore out. So i just found a later model one that’s had a good previous owner.

FAV KW.jpg My favorite truck will always be a Kenworth K100E Aerodyne. They were sharp and classy. Hardly ever see them anymore but when I do I stop and stare. If it wasn't for the dog house it would be the perfect truck to me.

Every driver probably has had a truck at some point that is really good.

I have been fortunate to have had several trucks that were really good.

The best OTR work vs Winter Storms unlimited snow, ice, freezing rain, rain and so forth in mountains is a CAT powered 89 volvo E model sleeper with steel bodied tractor, no plastic. Airride on back axles, amber fog lights up front and just a big kitty that wont quit. How deep that snow got did not matter, how slippery it got did not matter. How thick the ice on it did not matter. Nothing mattered. Especially when that auto glass expected in the GM Factory at Baltimore next day from Kentucky without fail. It was the last of the old mechanicals of that time. Top of the line for what it was in those days. Volvo has forgotten how to make trucks since then. They simply are not credible anymore.

Another is a Mack Superliner 500. Not particularly fast with it's V8 format and 15 speed fitted as a dump truck from previous work as OTR tractor. She will slide in rain when empty but a jog of that large steering wheel eases that right quick. that was her one failing. Not enough to be a strike.

A third would be a particular FLD 120 issued by Dowdy back in the late 90's at my request. It was a road trip tractor until I got a hold of it and had her purring with one exception of a right turn screw up in his driveway (You would think I knew better...) and I knew I would not want any of his then brand new KW's just a matress, captians chair rebuild and a few other minor items and were off to the races. Now Freightliner is not always that good. But this truck more or less did everything I required of it including some very long range short on fuel driving upwards of 2200 miles with some very careful use of power. Usually 330 gallons is good for 1650 or so all day long. But when Boss says don't fuel in CALI until AZ and you are just leaving WA southbound... thats a real problem. But we did it. not too many gallons in the bottom of them dry tanks that day but we did it. That sealed my love for that one.

I'd say an old w900a would be my favorite, with the long hood and the first of the stand up sleepers with a 1MM or 5DS cat swapped in, until I win the lottery my favorite truck is my paid for 97 W9.

How did ther Aerodynamic in that KW cab over work? Did you crawl over the doghouse into your bed? Or was there a gap between doghouse and bunk where you could standup? I’ve never been inside one. I learned to drive in a K100 flat top.

You had to crawl over the dog house. There were 2 places to stand, each directly behind the seats, easier to put your pants on.
