Just wondering if its possible for a new driver ( recent graduate ) from a tractor trailer truck driving school to obtain a driving job locally. I've got my class A CDL with hazmat, doubles/tripples and tanker endorsements. I know the opportunities in OTR , but would really would like to drive locally for a number of good reasons (elderly father, new immigrant wife, my dog) . Is it wishful thinking?

It all depends on the companies in your area and their need for drivers. My company in the past required 2 years experience now they want 6 mos but will take newbies in some cases. They aren't hiring right now and the head of the dedicated account is the person that hires, when they hire.

There is no average answer like there are no shoes for average feet. You only need one job so it doesn't really matter if many, few, or just one company hire newbies for local work.

My cousin's husband got his CDL about 3 years ago and he went straight into local work. It would work for him if he would stick around for more than a few months at a time. You live in the Twin Cities area so I'm sure you could find good steady local work. I think Dart Transit has a yard there. I think the best approach would be to find a company nearby and run OTR for them for a year or two but because of your situation, that probably won't work. I would say you have a pretty good chance of finding local work because of where you live and being in your early fifties doesn't hurt either.

I got a local job driving a Cement truck straight outta school b/c I wasnt old enough for OTR I had a pretty good driving record which helps a bunch but it still was alot of speculation b/c the company I got hired on with doesnt really like to hire young or inexperienced drivers. However since I have started and moved up they are more likely to hire younger guys that are new than older more expeirenced drivers bc Im the trainer and I REALLY dont like training some guy that has more driving experience than I have been alive and refuses to listen to anything I say its happend 3 times all of those drivers lasted 3 months combined. I have also been offered a job driving end dump and hauling grain but I needed to be 21 which Im not yet.

You can find local if you really want it bad enough. I did even when the nay sayers said good luck you won't find anything unless you have otr exp. I didn't listen and thats why I'm not on here posting how I got screwed by a otr company.

Is it harder to find, yes took me about two months after school to find somehting that I wanted but I did find something. I could have sooner but one place that would have hired me didn't appeal to me that well.

My advice is get your cdl and go home and blanket the entire area in which you live with applications and talk to people find out where the jobs are. You can do it. It really is all up to you though the more you try the better the odds. I think you will be surprised just how easy it is.
