Vent Door Open on Refrigerated Onion Load?

I’m hauling my 2nd full load of onions. The first time the BOL specified to have the rear vent/inspection door open while in transit. This time around, the BOL only says, “Cargo must be dry and well ventilated. Temperature 40-45 F.”

I asked the shipper, the forklift guy, and the broker. There weren’t exactly sure, but they said to just keep the vent door closed. What do you think? Also, if you keep the vent door open, do you close it when it rains or snows?

Onions needs to be vented is what I was always told. Unless it was raining. The loads were never completely tarped except for rain or snow.

They need to be kept dry as moisture rots em out really fast.

You could always tell when a flatbed got caught in the rain. Some won't actually use precautionary measures with their tarps.

The only reason they run the refer ion a onion load is for the air dryer, keep the vent open.

Unless you’re loaded to the back door I’d leave the vent open 24/7. Onions give off a lot of gas. I’m not a expert, but I think the more build up of gas the faster they rot.

Always ask your broker or your dispatch.
And always write those specific instructions on the BOL. Those dockworkers will not be paying for that load.

So do you open the front vent as well?

When you consider flatbeds don't have any walls.

Not if you want them to stay dry.
I would just open the door vent and as long as the temp is below 60-65 degrees, run with it.

My trailer doesn’t have a vent in the top front. It seems like all the reefer trailers with the newest Thermo King reefer model won’t have this vent or it will be disabled. This model is wider than the previous one.
