Is synthetic oil (at twice the cost or regular) a good deal? They say it should last twice as long, and I got to wonder...if ya have the money, why not pay twice as much and stop half as often?

Syn oil gets just as dirty juast as fast as reg oil, the only thing that can extend oil change intervals is a bypass filter

If you are paying twice the amount for a synthetic then I personally think you are paying to much. As I mentioned in other threads I run Schaeffer's 9000 full Synthetic at a cost of $18 a gallon compared to $11 for Rotella at Wal-Mart (the cheapest I have found so far). Now I buy my Schaeffer's in 1 gal jugs and 5 gal buckets. If I bought the oil in drums I could get a dollar or so more off each gallon. Lowbudget is right about the oil getting just as dirty. So synthetic maybe a waste of money if you don't extend your drain intervals out to justify the cost. I have done this with out a bypass system so far and pretty much break even between the regular dino oil and sythetic at about 25,000 miles.

I use Schaeffer as well. I get it in 30 or 55 gal drums for $14-$15 a gallon (cheaper than the regular oils on truckstop shelves). I use the 7000 series synthetic blend. I do not use a bypass filter. I get 30,000 mile oil change intervals (per oil samples and probably because I disabled the EGR on my ISX). Also, which of the oil companies will supply you with FREE oil sample kits like Schaeffer will? NONE. Which of the oil companies will have specials, like a free case (30 tubes) of synthetic grease, when you purchase a drum of oil? NONE. And, which of the oil companies will ship the oil to your front door for FREE? NONE. Only Schaeffer does these things and they have been at the lubrication game longer than any other supplier. Yep, longer than Mobil, Shell, etc. A family owned business since 1837. Not a typical shelf item you find in the stores. They are very well known and respected in major construction, agriculture, mining, etc industries. Even the military came calling on Schaeffer when they needed a special oil for helicopters operating in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are a few of the smaller fleets that have finally caught on to Schaeffer. Some of the other oils might appear better on paper, but it is darn hard to beat Schaeffer in the real world for cost and performance. I just wish I had come across them earlier.

Some of these new egr engines require a synthetic oil. My '09 Mack requires a special blend of Citgo Synthetic, since we do all our own PM work, and general repair work (on the trucks not under warranty) my boss bought a tote of the stuff and is using it in all our trucks. We generally go 15,000 to 20,000 miles or 300 hrs between changes.
