True enough Danelady... only place I can ever think that I felt nearly as free was when my ship went on deployment. Even though I was in the Navy, just standing up on deck and feeling the wind and the salt spray, looking all around and not seeing another boat anywhere, ahh now that is freedom... until your LPO or Work Center Sup caught ya goofing off and told ya to get back to work. :biggrin_2552:

I'm a millwright at a papermill and I believe my little job is coming to an end soon.
I've been hanging around on this forum for a while now trying to learn and prepare myself for trucking as much as possible.
They have recently shut down some equipment at my mill and by September 70 employees will be walking out the gate,I think all this is the beginning of the end for the mill.I'm going to ride it out as long as I can but I have no desire to go back to construction what I used to do in refineries fighting 105 deg. heat swinging 20lbs. sledge hammers etc.
I need something a little easier on my body,I'm 45 now not too old but than again not the go getting ball of fire I used to be.

I think trucking is one of those careers that will always be here and pays decent with benefits most of all which are getting rare in construction.
Granted I know trucking is not by far the easiest job,but at I think it will be easier on the body and will pay the bills and groceries and no it won't make you rich but what job does punching the clock for someone?
And I still have the traveling in my blood from the old construction days, hate to be gone from my family but any kind of decent paying job nowadays will carry you away from home:construction, oilfield and of course trucking.

Gotta provide for the family, done a little bit of everything but never tried trucking.
    My 2 cents....or 3.

So you're a Navy man? My son is too! During his first year he applied for a scholarship and now he has one more year of school and he gets his commission. Go ahead...ask me if I'm proud!

    Haha, sounds like it. :biggrin_25519:

Thought about going for the officer program when I was in, but realized I didn't want to make a career out of it, and for the time investment involved, I really felt you should if you become an officer.

Besides, I didn't like the idea of being called "sir" but knowing the guy calling me that meant to spell it "c u r.":biggrin_25525:

Not that I get much more respect as a driver. :biggrin_2552:

And good luck to your son! You can definitely do well in the Navy if you enjoy it and have a good attitude.

    danelady Thanks this.
