Recently I went to my local Michigan works service center to check on the no worker left behind program, and get back into school for IT. However, they turned me down in saying that since i have a valid CDL-A it is considered a "marketable skill", and wouldn't be able to recieve state assistance. Which is rediculous, because what these people don't realize is that the companies that these CDL Mills are sending people to work for (swift, werner, england, Jb. Hunt) are only continually hiring people because they suck so bad that they can't keep people in their trucks.

Is it marketable? I don't know. My dad has 42 years of driving under his belt, and can't find a job.. Why do you guys think that is? Do you think that possibly they WANT the inexperienced drivers so that they can pay them less, and then piss them off and treat them as inhumanely as possible until they quit and then bring in another one while getting extra tax breaks in the mean time? Let's do a little survey...

If you're a current CDL- Holder that was recently laid off / terminated and are having a hard time finding a *legitimate* company to work for, sign here. This info is going to be forwarded to Gov. Granholm, and a few other deciding parties.. Then we'll see how "marketable" having a CDL is.

Don't know about you, but I don't think that making 400 a week driving for swift is going to help the economy all that much.

Several of the large carriers right now are not hiring experienced drivers. And (in my opinion) some of them are trying to push the experienced guys out the door. I dont know if we can name specific companies here but I know a few say straight out we are only hiring students at this time, call back in 3-4 months.

I have a job currently with one of these CDL carriers, and as soon as I can find somewhere else to go I'm gone. But this time I wont work for a company that offers training at all. I see everyday the new drivers getting all the miles while the experienced, higher paid, drivers sit and sit and sit. Of course not all carriers are like this, but enough of them are that it isnt a suprise to anyone here to hear it.

Anyway I do agree with you. Having a CDL is ONLY marketable right now if you have less than 3 months experience. I guess safety isnt as big a factor as they claim it is if we are to judge this by the current hiring standards of many.

When i was terminated (from TMC) as well as another 500 or so drivers, they were *still* hiring people at the same time.

    Odd.

The few "backup plans" that i had (lone star, Bti, etc) are no longer hiring out of Michigan because there isn't much freight coming out that they can find, and they are finding it increasingly hard to get drivers home on the weekends.

    It just sucks.

I'll be ###### if the Governors office diddn't reply within 5-10 minutes of receiving the email.

We'll see where this goes. Ultimately i'd like to see many changes with these companies abusing our tax dollars to make profit, in a way the government has been bailing them out for a long time.

If there were policies set fourth for trucking companies as there are with regularly hourly workers then i suspect things would change drastically. If the governmental agencies would stop sending people to these companies like sheep who believe that they're going to be "paid tourists" and make 1,000+ a week then i think the companies will ultimately have no other choice than to step back and take a look at how they are treating people, instead of relying on that revolving door scheme in which we're all too familiar with.

I was Terminated back in Febuary of this year for defending my self against a company driver(was a lease operator at the time), the ####### took a hammer at me and i did what I had to do, I was Terminated, cuffed and thrown in jail. As for this ugly ###### ******* Taylor he kept his job. Now I have a assult charge on my record, no one will touch me. I have been calling companys like crazy but nothing. I have been driving since 1999 off and on, my wish is to go back to the career i started to do all of those years ago, I can't find work, have had to move back in with my mom, had 3 offers this week but as soon as they found out what happened they recnded, i am broke, angry, and feel like i have beenthrown in the garbage. I am a hard working woman who cause i did what I had to do I almost want to quit looking and go find something else that i can do, does anyone know if there is a nice company that needs a smart woman so i can achieve my goal of owning my own rig? Thanx. . I want to drive that is what i am good at.

Hi. Canadian here, I don't know if this helps your cause, but up here, it seems like the other way around. Nobdy's hiring people with no experience, and if they are hiring at all, they want people with 2 to 5 years experience. I got my CDL about 8 months ago, and nobody's given me a second glance so far. Thankfully, I have been working part-time washing dishes, and my bf has been doing security work, or we would have been up to our eyeballs in debt, instead of just up to our armpits.

Sure, there's been a bit of an uptick in freight lately, but it's just the seasonal shipping of crops. In my opinion, from all that I have read and heard, it'll probably be at least another year until we see the industry really see improvement.

I'm getting tired of telling people that I'm licenced, and having them tell me, 'That's so cool! Why aren't you out there making cash hand over fist?' It seems like people who are not in the industry can't understand. Maybe they know that less freight =less truck driving jobs, but they can't really believe it in their black little hearts, because they still see so many trucks on their daily commute. So, I can't blame the general public for not believing.

Gee, sorry for the rant, I've been unhappy about this whole situation for a while, and the transportation industry is pretty bad up here, too.

I am in the same boat here. Been released by a company that I will not name and getting all the same results. Now the Company that released me, that has these big rolling pumpkins :)biggrin_25525:) also started cleaning house by releasing drivers with marks on thier records to thin the fleet.
Next they started the ax on drivers who had long term employment and was making .42 cpm and clean records. The reason is they cost too much. This company was losong big contract and was being lowballed by Swift and Werner. They can not compete in the bidding wars with drivers making .42 - .40 cpm when companies like Werner are paying .26 cpm

Funny thing is, this company shut down all its schools because of an overcrowded fleet.

I was terminated on june 12th after having my first upset of the rig in 15 1/2 years from where i was employed. funny thing is they have had some drivers that have rolled a truck up to 4 times and are still driving for them. then they have the nerve to say reapply in 45 days as a rehire, and i just tried last week and they said they were not hiring rehires. go figure, and they are still hiring students.
if anyone has any ideas for someone that lives in the west central illinois area, i am still looking for a company to drive for.
