Soon-to-be CDL Student

I started posting on here the other day not knowing there was an introduction portion of the site. So, as the title states, I will be starting my CDL training soon...mid-February. I have a background in warehousing and production. With that, I understand logistics and have had many a conversation with truckers from lots of different carriers. I am also a convicted felon with 2 convictions from 2006. I have given thought to pursuing my CDL in the past, but now everything in my life is lining up just right. I will be coming off parole 03/18/20, so I’ll be free of State supervision once starting my new career coming out of school. I am open to thoughts, opinions, feedback, lessons learned, constructive criticism, and friendly banter. I come here to learn some things from men and women who have been in the business awhile. Hopefully I can avoid making some mistakes others before me have made. Anyway, this is me.

Edit: Living near Dallas, TX and from Long Beach, CA

 

It is 180 hours, I believe. 1 week written tests and 4 days x 4 weeks hands on. The school is called International Schools in Arlington, TX. I first thought I would just want to stay local and enjoy a bit better paycheck than having a warehouse job, but I really love traveling. So, I am basically keeping an open-mind and see what opportunities become available as I put myself out there with various companies. If getting a local hourly driving job proves to be the best option to begin gaining experience, then I’ll take it. Ultimately, my goal is to raise my standard of living and create job security through attaining a career versus another job with paycheck. I do know that flatbed is probably not for me. Being really short and having a lower back that has seen better days, I would break myself trying to get into flatbed hauling. That seems like a special breed of driver who can make a career out of it and last.
