I suggest you get as much education as possible. The FMCSA could not care less about how much trucking experience you have. They regulate the industry.

I would imagine that a person who has been driving a truck or been in the related industry long enough to be considered for a position that high in the FMCSA to be involved in the decision making of the rules & regs, would never be considered because....... he would be considered...... over qualified.
REO6205 Thanks this. -
From what I hear from my instructors MOST who work for DOT and FMCSA don’t have a CDL and have never touched a semi before. When I was testing to get my license In November, the first guy I tested with read everything off the laminated paper and since I didn’t pass the first time I re-tested with another guy who was super nice and surprisingly had his CDL before so he knew how it operated. He told me most of the time you don’t need a CDL to do admin or managerial jobs for DOT and FMCSA, it’s all textbook materials.

I will let Dr "bones" McCoy sum up my feelings on this subject!

You don't have to be qualified if you are certified.
Some places won't hire ex truck drivers because they know where to look and could disrupt the industry. Politics at it's finest.
