Alot of states require a certain gross weight to be on registration to haul over 80k. Iowa I'm registered for 150,000, Mi 160,000, Idaho 106,000. And so on and that's usually on state routes not interstate. I know if you only have 80k on your registration for Iowa you can't get a permit for more.PoleCrusher, singlescrewshaker, cke and 8 others Thank this.

Was they pulling a spread?
I think kanas is 85k on a spread....I was talking with a guy this spring that would run to Oklahoma with a triple and was running into Kansas City on the same roads we was....not legal but he hadn't got popped yet.PoleCrusher, singlescrewshaker, cke and 6 others Thank this. -
I have to pull the tandem to KC cause the triple has about two inches clearance on the scale in the bakery hole...have to dump my air on the trailer to get under a I-beam. I won't do it without a spotter I trust.

The Pete only has 575,000 miles. I'm not sure what the truck did before we bought it, but I am consistently hauling between 99,500 to 105,500 with it. I haven't noticed any bushings prematurely wearing out yet but maybe in time. I'm legal at the 99,500 with my setup here in ND but haul more with harvest/winter 10% permits.
I was told to watch the bolts from breaking on that aluminum bracket for the suspension bolted to the frame. I have not broke any yet.SL3406, PoleCrusher, singlescrewshaker and 8 others Thank this. -
Our tractor that runs the auger at the bin site runs all day long cause of the cold temps and only works while we unload.
One of my brothers said it was leaking oil at the engine so I checked it out. I said not to worry that's just fuel slobber.SL3406, PoleCrusher, singlescrewshaker and 6 others Thank this. -
It's on tandem but its farm tag. Since it doesn't leave state it's on farm tagsPoleCrusher, singlescrewshaker, cke and 4 others Thank this.

all of the above but mostly housing thickness/tensile strength.
Some older 38's had 34's ring and pinion with heavier axles and the same housing as 40's.
The "super 40's" had 40"s gears with even heavier housings. The axle rating is what weight can safely be carried on a tandem set on a normal road surface with a safety factor. The gears need to be able to "lift" the maximum load on a 15%? grade without damage and inside a safety factor.
This information is repeated from a mechanic as told to me as I was shopping for s truck in the early 90's.Last edited: Jan 22, 2020
