I’ve attempted, under the complaint of Shift Work Sleep Disorder, to obtain a Modafinil prescription, and it seems to have been a waste of time and money. The nurse practitioner seemed frightened of my request, which is curious.

    Because of the ELD mandate,
THERE IS LITTLE OPPORTUNITY TO ABUSE OR EXPLOIT WAKEFULNESS DRUGS.

Drivers are now under 24 hour electronic surveillance; employers and enforcement agencies know when we’ve been sleeping, they know when we’re awake, they know when we’ve been bad or good.

Santa Claus never threatens your livelihood...

The feds aren’t obligating a “do you hold a CDL license?” on all employment applications, to ensure non-driver work is tallied up as on-duty, not driving, but a series of nationally publicized accidents might provoke such a law.

This regulatory environment should encourage physicians to be more trusting that a prescription would not be abused, but most physicians are ignorant of the rules, and frightened of bad outcomes.

I suggest the supplement Adrafinil, if you haven’t previously damaged your liver by alcohol or drug abuse, hepatitis, etc.

Your body will metabolize Adrafinil, the supplement, into Modafinil, the drug.

No prescription is required, but don’t expect Amazon to stock it (theft by the overworked employees, perhaps?)

Perform your due diligence, do your research, etc. and if you do try a bottle, follow some simple rules:

No food two hours before taking.
No food two hours after taking.
No caffeine (until the effects begin to wear off)
    Drink plenty of water.
I wouldn’t use it more than four days a week.
    I recall “no smoking”, also.

    To avoid gossip and rumors:
Don’t offer samples, don’t call Adrafinil a drug (it’s a supplement), best not to talk about it.

AND don’t waste your time and money with the medical profession, in pursuit of a Modafinil prescription.

A DOT five panel screen won’t detect Adrafinil, or Modafinil.

At this point in time, detection requires a blood/plasma draw, a gas chromatograph and a spectrometer.

I know two drivers that use Provigil, Both are under the care of a great physician who closely monitors their care. Both have OSA and use CPAP. However, they have scheduled all over the place and have sleep trouble. As of 2014, the FMCSA was OK with drivers using this medication. If this has changed recently I am unaware.

The reason why people cannot work in shifts that destroy normal sleep cycles is because there is no set time every day or night to get to sleep and do nothing but sleep at the same time period every day or night.

Ive had to flip from day time shift running to night time shift running in local trucking before and it takes 3 days to make the flip. One time the dispatchers did not give me the necessary three days off but started my dedicated run that evening.

Boom I had too much trouble that week and eventually quit that particular type of freighting. Why? because they did not give me three days to make the switch to night running.

Now I consider myself pernamently night running in life and sleep by day. However I sleep when I need to sleep, thats a form of medicine. Nothing cures like a good nap or sleep. No medicines or drugs needed.

I had narcolepsy for a little while after I stopped trucking and it was taken care of with adequate and regular rest or proper sleep. If I had pushed too many errands or run too hard through a work day I would brew a pot of coffee and keep going. But I refuse to run as I once did in trucking. Sleep next week sort of thing. Thats a form of abuse. But frankly its water under the bridge.
