    More than likely that is what I will do. Just figured I'd ask for some opinions besides the guys I work with or talk to every day.

    My thinking was, I can get an after market manifold for less than half what dealer wants. Called and shopped on line. Found an OEM manifold $250 cheaper.

    But what really has me going is.
    Dealer is charging 14 hours!
    Turbo and manifold should take 7 hoursTOPS!!

    (My friend Ed and I pulled his turbo, in a truck stop parking lot. Took it across street turned it in as a core and got his new one. Walked back across street and installed it. Total time hour and half)

    I'm aware they charge "book" hours. But there should be an adjustment since the turbo is already off. So the manifold removal is half done.

    I'm sure if I find someone (small shop or private mechanic) who will work on truck besides the dealer. That could and most likely would be done. I had 3 shops for my freightliner, but they all say. They can repair some things but dont have Volvo software. They probably could do this, but after the tow to Volvo, paying for time spent already, then towing it again. The saving arent enough to justify.

    The turbo itself is the problem. Carbon builds up and binds the movement of the Vanes. It would be more cost effective to replace the whole unit. Cleaning buys you a little time.

    1st, yes you're on a Volvo forum, but Volvo trucks can come with Volvo or Cummins engines. That's why we asked.
    2nd, it doesn't happen every time, but when removing the turbo, you could break the studs and end up having to replace the exhaust manifold anyway.
    3rd, the VGT actuator motor could be seized, but more likely the turbo vanes are seized. You need to find out which. The seized vanes, may or may not have burnt out the VGT actuator motor. The actuator motor is available separately. but I don't know if Volvo sells the turbo without the actuator. Cummins does, but I don't know about Volvo. If you replace the actuator, you need Volvo software to calibrate it. If an independent shop has the software, great. If not, you're stuck going to the dealer.

    How much for a reman turbo? If the dealer turbo new or a reman.

    Think you can get the parts and do the labor yourself. Then take it to a shop and have turbo calibrated.

    Dealer only sells Remanufactured turbos. New ones are unobtainable.

    Both Cummins and Volvo are VGT turbos... moot point.

    Does this d13 have a holset turbo? Seen a Mack with MP8 engine has a holset turbo which is made by Cummins.
