Getting a hazmat

In Virginia, It's submit for background $83, receive letter then take test. VA also offers $20 discount on TWIC cred if you show them your HAZMAT endorsement. Then the ~$125 TWIC becomes ~$105.

 

This to me sounds like the best way to go.

 

I do find it interesting and wonder what goes into the decision each state makes as to which to require 1st.
I will add though, a tidbit on the TWIC Credential that ties in here—if you are seeking both haz &TWIC, in VA, getting TWIC 1st saves a couple dollars.
TWIC:$125
HAZ:$83
HAZ discounted with presenting your TWIC: $49
TWIC discounted when presenting your HAZ: $105
So $125+$49 =$174
$83+$105=$188

I turned in my Hazmat for personal reasons not related to this topic but am glad that most every hazmat load in my experience was trouble free and the process was relatively simple requiring just a written. Not all this over baked fed hysteria driven post 9-11 stuff that really does not help weed out those intent on bad things.

 

I did my TWIC first and added hazzy as a addon, made it cheaper for the pair, after TWIC arrivd i just went down to dmv and took test.. i know for sure, CA,AZ,UT background first before allowed to test

 

In 2017 I got my Hazmat in California. I tested first and then did my background. Maybe the rules have changed since then

 

I could be wrong, i started the process in UT, ended up finishing in AZ, tbh, i did twic in 2014, just added on to HM 5 months ago, but i member thats what I was told when i wanted to get HM when i got twic. Maybe im wrong ..

But figure, spend 100 bux to get a bg check, your more than likely going to pursue finishing with a $15 addon test, vs taking the test first and then never doing the background

 

I do agree with you.

Rules are constantly changing so I have no idea what the rule is now. If I remember correctly the lady at the DMV told me I could do the process either way.
I think I tested first because I was already at my local DMV and I don't have a TSA office close to me, so I had to drive 4 hours away to do a background check
