Was chatting with one of their Company drivers at a truck stop this past week. I have been considering moving to this company because I think they are one of the better mega carriers around. He has worked for them for over a decade and he shared that Roehl is moving towards driver facing cameras for 100% of their fleet. He stated all of the new trucks have them pre-installed before assigned. He had an older truck that was getting close to the end of its service life and was concerned when he gets another truck ti will have an inward facing drive cam. That is a definite show stopper for me as I will not work for a company that does not trust its employees plus I like my privacy. Any Roehl drivers out there that can confirm or deny this?

Provided your not playing on your phone while driving, why is it such a deal breaker?

Close the curtain when is off duty time and the camera can not see in the bunk.

Good luck finding a mega or mid sized that doesn't have driver facing cameras now.

I am a professional (never had a moving violation in my personal vehicle or a commercial vehicle, never had a DOT violation or overweight ticket) - I don't need or want someone watching over my shoulder.

Better get used to it, everyone will have one soon enough. Just like auto shift and lane departure warnings and all that other nonsense... I don’t like it any more than the next guy but I have accepted it as a reality.

Years ago I attended a safety meeting when I drove for Millis and part of the presentation was they would show you clips of the drive cam footage, well the mention of the call about the chips made me think of the one clip of the driver going down the highway with the chip bag basically covering his whole face getting the last few crumbs out. What triggered the camera was he swerved, definitely funny at the time but not if he would’ve had a accident

It's just a matter of time until driver facing cameras come back to bite these carriers. All of this can be used as evidence, as long as humans drive the long boring hours that drivers are required to do, mistakes will happen. Even if a driver isn't at fault, you now have evidence that he didn't react correctly and therefore contributed to the accident. The other things like dashcams, and collision avoidance systems are a help even though they can be annoying at times.

Truck driving attracts people who like independence. People like that are not going to go into trucking if they feel non-drivers are going to constantly look over their shoulder.

I have just listed two reasons that this is a bad idea. There is already a huge driver shortage, this will be another contributing factor.

Not to sidetrack this thread too far, but the shortage is measurable and real. Unfortunately, most companies don't understand and don't care what drivers are looking for. I tried one more attempt to continue driving with another company, out of 5 dispatches, only 2 could be legally done. We won't even go into all the other issues. When companies see drivers as a liability to their bottom line then they will minimize their exposure, trucking will continue to be a dead end career with poor working conditions. The result is that young people will see driving as a last resort and companies will fulfill their assumptions that drivers are accidents looking for a place to happen by hiring people looking for a last chance.
