Compression is above average per freightliner tolerance levels, and injectors are all good. Oil sample was also good. Motor only has 499 on it, runs and idles like a sewing machine, it’s just flat and unresponsive.

this motor makes peak torque at 1200 rpm and peak hp at 1500, the sweet spot should be right where I cruise at. These newer motors aren’t high revving motors, if I drove this truck how you’re suggesting I’d just be wasting fuel. When you feel this motor out, it wants to be driven between 12 and 15, and will pull as far down as 1000; the power just isn’t there. I e ran this motor up to 17 just to fall back within the powerband after shifting cresting a grade, but there’s no benefit to it outside of that because it drops off DRASTICALLY a smidgen past 1600. Id let my Volvo pull down to 1000 in 10th cresting a grade on the cruise control and it pick right back up in short order.

    ok .
go to Detroit diesel dealer, not freightliner, and update software's in mcm, cpc and acm. ask them to check fuel mapping numbers are correct for that engine. Ask them to run doc face cleaning procedure. When doc face is partially clogged engine is flat and unresponsive. I would connect the DL soft and run it under load. The boost pressure value, fuel pressure value, doc inlet pressure value would show something.
Addition: full of ash DPFs also will make engine unresponsive

my man, that’s exactly what I’ll do. I have a Detroit shop 10 mins from my house, they have a dyno as well. I’ll you guys know what turns up if anything!

if you can get it to Pittsburgh Power, that might help. I don’t know the history of the truck. They can do some ECM programming as well as a Diesel Force cleaning. You can look at the diesel Force website, they also have shops in CA that can do that service. It’s really cool.

You’ve mentioned that it had right at 500k miles. Depending on the service it was in before you. It could be ready for an overhead and DPF replacement. If the last DPF filters installed where just a poorly done bake and blow, then they could be already full, but the ash accumulator shows 80%.

My company’s policy is DPF’s every 250k and overhead valve adjustments on every odd #00,000mile.

Good point! On my first PM with it, I’m going to get an overhead done and have them check and/or service the DPF. The last company bought them as a fleet brand new from freightliner and trades them soon as the warranty ended, a Detroit shop me a few things they did for preventive maintenance but DPF service wasn’t one of them. I’ll let you guys know the turnout.

why do I feel like that collision mitigation system makes it feel gutless too??

Make sure you get a good guy to make your overhead adjustments. I’ve seen a bad overhead make it look like it needed a set of injectors because the idle speed balance was off, the computer was still compensating for it, but the amount it had to compensate looked bad.

Also, when they do the DPF’s make sure they blow and vacuum the DOC. And get at least the Detroit reman DPF’s. Even if they aren’t the most “economical choice”. At least you’ll know what you’ve got.

Frontal crash detection would definitely make your truck “feel” gutless. Because the computer is backing off the throttle for you to keep you the same distance away from the vehicle ahead of you. But if you are losing more speed than that vehicle, then it’s probably not the whole issue.

You right, I had alittle bleed over from the old 60 series. But other than that, the statement stands. I’ve adjusted the post accordingly.
