Is this a dangerous bridge for trucks or just more scary than anything?

It’s just another road, unless the wind is high.

I thought it was fun. It's a little adventure, not a lot place you can drive and not see land

I used to go thru there a LOT, and the only part that can get "scary" if your not paying attention is the 2 tunnels. It's pretty tight going thru them; but unless the wind is high as stated above, it's a nice 12 miles ride.

    Chesapeake bay bridge tunnel

    Toll Rates!

I can almost see this bridge from where I live. It can be very foggy out on the bay along with the wind. Pay close attention to the highway signs as you get closer to it.

I used to drive over/under on it pretty regularly as a charter bus driver, and it’s usually pretty easy. Two things to look out for: the tunnels are one lane in each direction (if memory serves you have to merge left), and it can get a little scary when the wind comes up, feel free to drive a little slower then. When it really gets windy, they close it to trucks, buses, and RVs, so keep an eye on the weather.

I was driving across in a bus one day and coming out of one of the tunnels was hit by a blast of wind that blew me from the right lane to the left! I was grateful that there wasn’t anyone in that lane!

Yes it can kill your wallet. I always enjoyed the trip, other than our trailers. We had drop deck van's. Big sails catching winds when others did not. Had to wait 12 hours in 1995. Winds were high, and they would not allow empty trucks to cross back then. If the winds were high.

It is in storms. They have a closure sequence. What you want is to be full 40 ton. If you have a change of appointments or have time to wait before crossing until things settle down, do so.

In my day it was only one deck two way, narrow. I think it's two decks completed by now.

Its near 30 miles going to sea with a big rig across the ocean. Its unique in the United States.
