The population density in major metropolitan areas rivals some countries. Therefore we have a larger population of criminals as well. Americans in general won't tolerate being a victim.
In rural areas quick access to law enforcement is unlikely so you must be self-reliant.
While many other countries have a submissive culture the United States has had a individualist culture with a tendency to protect the weak.
Instead of stating American gun culture is bad, why not ask why other countries victimhood culture is good?

Out here it might be 40 minutes before the Law reaches you, and some cruisers they have are fitted with what they call special flight mode. Meaning above 150 sustained. Some of our roads are based on the old twisting indian trails so it will be a minute before they get there.
Fortunately Castle Doctrine is strong here so.. its generally well known that if you try to do something stupid its not going to go well. I shoot pretty good almost cut a card edge on at 10 yards on good days without a palsy. Even with a palsy I can put a round generally in the center hearts of a 3 playing card more or less. My ex shoots better than I do which is thought provoking.
I should make a sign. Never mind the homeowner, beware the wife. -
problem with Arkansas is , you have a duty to retreat unless you are on your propertyx1Heavy Thanks this. -
In your vehicle, home and lands (Curtiledge) owned by you and also sole owner of a business and it's property. (One exception, employees allowed and protected to keep guns in their cars on your property at work)
Retreat yes however there are several absolutes under which you can attack. Example a mob throwing flaming torches or firebombs on your home. You can go take them out. But it's such a obscure rule.
Also duty to retreat does not obligate me to draw away from home. At home I have retreated. There is no where left to go.
My instructors leave me a small stack of State Laws from simple battery on up to Capital Murder including brandishing, terroristic threats and so on that is possible if you were not behaving properly with a weapon.
The last time I looked up statistics there were about 180,000 concealed carry active in Arkansas and less than 100 are revoked or prosecuted for a variety of problems.
It gets even more nuanc'ed when you enter other factors. Bottom line, it is very good never to have to use that weapon today. We live in a area where people say yes sir, yes ma'am, hold doors or help in small ways and say we appreciate you and so on. There isnt much call for violence here. Hardly any. (There is some, but the Law knows whats what and who and where etc)
By and large living here is very nice. Compared to say Baltimore west pratt street at night or Saratoga etc. Its very violent there. Little Rock after sunset is pretty dangerous however the main gang lords know a structure of engagement of sorts and generally do not seek neutrals quietly going about their work or hospital or whatever. GENERALLY.
I have studied history dating to before the Civil War here in this state and as it turns out Arkansas was really really troublesome in many ways in it's early days. They had a judge in Ft Smith who kept a gallows capable of swinging 8 souls at once. That gallows is still there to this day. And that was what he did. Hang em until there is hardly anymore crime.
Searcy was not formally established until about 1843 when crime and thievery got bad enough as to require law. And so it was. And so on. North Little Rock VA fort roots was a fort in which combat infantry (Such as it is...) were deploying into Little Rock daily for years to combat those firing at people in the broad light of day. Essentially occupation and military rule. Among other things.
I can go on, but its quite something.Last edited: Feb 16, 2020

my parents moved from Texas to Mena so when I went to visit I checked Ar. Laws.
I have a Texas carry license so I always check to see and like most states you do have the castle doctrine but if you are not at home say at a gas station or something and someone is doing something stupid you have to retreat if possible.
if you are licensed to carry you should be aware of all the laws that pertain -

What I must separate in my mind is my Israeli Training, which is military core designed to provide a foundation for taking terrorists out. That would rank as Capital murder here. It better be a terrorist. Fortunately we don't have hardly any of those here. Not everyone gets this training. But many have.
I don't mind going over the Law pertaining to concealed carry. For me here in Arkansas the one change is the addition of the Enhanced Carry tier to the CHL Licensing here in Arkansas. That means the State Police has prescribed a active shooter course over 8 hours. When that is completed you are elevated to a higher tier of CHL and allowed to carry into places such as the State Capitol Building, Public Colleges and State DMV Offices and so forth. There is about 20 places barred to those who hold CHL but not elevated to Active shooter class. I have no ambition to take the state course and increase the tier or gain access to the places I said that provides. Im already trained in active shooters, but not through the State police so if the time comes we'll see how that goes.
The main problem of Carry for me is state borders. If I breached Maryland's Border with my weapon concealed then I will need a Maryland non resident license as they do not honor anyones but their own. The process of getting same is a may issue situation of that state, not a shall issue as here in Arkansas. So there is no point. Once you leave the interstate highway system traveling with the ammo here and the gun there into Maryland you are breaking the laws somewhere. and forget DC.
I can go on, but we are getting to where we might go over minor differences and other problems of Carry, I don't want to take this into the weeds so to speak with too much detail and so forth and so on. Thankfully there are states that are Consitutional Carry requiring nothing, no CHL, no permit, no nothing. You put it on and go about your business. West Virginia comes to mind.
However. I think there may be challenges ahead that might defray our freedoms should the political situation change after the elections. Virginia comes to mind. Those Counties who find themselves under the thumb of Richmond are faced with a stark choice. Criminalize gun owners or essentially decide to leave Virginia and join West Virginia. Richmond in a extreme situation might find itself in charge of about 4 counties. VA will be awful small then. Its unfortunate. (And VA's Legislature will be reduced from a few hundred down to about a dozen.) But West Virginia does come from what was originally VA in the realm of the Civil War when it's people through one way or another chose to stay with the Union. And if the current VA situation added even more counties seeking to exclude the current Richmond's legislatures from forcing onerous laws onto them? So be it. They will join West Virginia and that will be that.
Anything is possible. As long there are bad guys out there who want to do evil things in the light of day or dark of night, then its necessary to carry. Until that day there is none at all.
