Not just 10 straight. Call it 4 days and three nights while the snow blows in the Fort Collins slaughterhouse bullpen, -20 and move the truck to work on the snow bed a little more packed under the rig while waiting now and then.

Quite honestly I think buying the Apu is pretty stupid. I found the box mounted it on my catwalk and put a 4000 Watt gasoline generator inside of it.. Once I change the oil from the breaking. I put Royal Purple in it.. I can run about 9 hours on 2 gallons of gas dot-dot the whole set-up including a space heater inside my truck with extension cords and everything probably cost me about $700.. The way I figure it in two months that thing is already paid for itself and I'm putting money in a savings account. LOLflood Thanks this.

I don't think APU's are stupid at all, they just need to be big enough to support hotel cooling, heating of humans, maintain some semblance of fuel return with heating to both tanks and warm the engine block in some way. In addition to that provide a inverter for 120 volt house power for those who can use it.
Thats not hard. Not to mention protecting and feeding the four batteries, and so on.alds, bzinger, PE_T and 1 other person Thank this. -
On a 550 cat and using a scan gage the amount of fuel burned while idleing matched the rpm almost exactly. EG
800 rpm .8gph
1000 rpm 1gph
1200 rpm 1.2gphbzinger, Rideandrepair, ODR and 2 others Thank this. -
So a APU burns the same little bit then? What does it matter to have that at all?
-
I think an APU is about 1/3 of GPH
All I know is I would rather have a truck idleing beside me than an APUflood, Rideandrepair, Deere hunter and 1 other person Thank this. -
My Scan Gauge shows about 0.95 gph at 900 rpm. A Thermo King APU will use about 0.33 gph when it’s running continuously. Fortunately, an APU will turn off multiple times at night or once it reaches the desired temperature. During winter, the APU stays off most of the time.
86scotty, Rideandrepair and x1Heavy Thank this. -
Interesting.
My big ### Generac house generator something like a 8500 watt to start and 12500 watts to surge start heavy motors and packing about 30 amps and 240 volt or 15 amps times 4x 120 volt or can be phased with second generator to drive commercial 440 volt mains.
8 gallon tank on top. Get about oh... 11 hours out of it purring quietly driving our home in winter.
Thats a tad less than a gallon per hour. Maybe 35% load capacity. -
For heat only, can’t beat the little diesel 1 cylinder bunk heaters. 1/10 gal. Per hr. I see Chinese knockoffs on eBay now, $200 or so. I need one, ASAP. Parked between 2 noisy smelly APUs last night. The carbon monoxide poisoning can’t be good. DOTs always looking for an exhaust leak. They ought to be made to run a stack up. And Outlaw grass burners too. If I were King!!!
