I like the automatic, the Detroit DT-12 transmission is a nice setup. I think people don't feel in control because they don't know how it works completely. Most drivers want to use the engine brake in snow and ice when they should not even with a manual. The automatic will down shift on them. Then if the take foot off brakes it will go into neutral.
Automatic or manual?

Surely, you've got some sort of proof of that ####ing ridiculous claim?
Let's see it.
Our better yet, refute my points.
You can't. -
Would I like to drive a pretty w9 or Pete with a big hammer under the hood and an 18 speed. You bet. I sure do miss the days when I drove trucks like that. Especially if I’m in slick conditions. But rolling through Atlanta the 12 speed auto in my company 579 is mighty fine. Mighty fine.

I've been through orientation with about 75 drivers over the last 2-1/2 years.
Three (3) had auto restrictions.
Yeah, it really is an issue, you betchya. /sarcasm
People naturally feel threatened by tech. It's natural and nearly unavoidable.
But it also leads to an awful lot of BS, such as we are seeing, again, on this issue.
I suppose it's a good distraction from the real threat though, which is the trend toward autonomous vehicles. Bezos and Musk and all the rest aren't spending all that dough for no ROI. And you can bet that they are blowing a ton of cash buying Congresspersons. -

Manual or Automated. Run flatbed all over the western states. Seen some mud pits that scare D-9s. Have had both styles of transmissions. Not had any problems mud, snow, ice, rain, or grades. All did just fine. So I would take an automated over a manual any time. Why do all that shifting and clutch work in traffic, when all i need do is press a button and push/pull on the paddle. Less stress, easier on the body. Sounds good to me.

Very simple, I don't like being stuck. Both trucks I drove this week had frozen down, and one was blocked by snowbanks, didn't need to do anything except use my considerable off road experience to drive them out, after switching off traction control.
Automated transmissions don't do well for us.
City driving, stop and go, I hardly have to use the clutch pedal at all, and much smoother than the pos Eaton Ultra, which couldn't decide if it would obey the throttle until after fully stopping, which doesn't happen as much as you would think with the manual.
Oh, yeah, that week sitting at home my friend did because the I shift trans had to be replaced at 280,000 miles. Like he said, the fuel mileage difference didn't mean everything when figuring how long it will take to recover that lost revenue.
