You are right, driving in Europe is a privilege. I am german and in Germany you have to go to the driving School and do a minimum of 12 Hours...

Its not bad but probably not as good as it is in the us i guess. You got an hourly rate or a fixed one. health insurance, pension, etc is paid...
In general its not bad! Just a lot of traffic....and of course you dont have thousands of miles that you drive till you get to your destination....
