Could it have been an eaton CEMAT? I ran into one of them recently. it sounds like it's a 10 speed with a torque converter.
but ddec II uses a diferent switch arrangement so they would need to be changed
the ddec II uses a totally diferent wiring and switch setup for cruise if you need i may be able to dig up the drawing

we just had a century class 12.7l once it got warm it wouldn't pull at all and was running pretty bad. it was a valve adjustment issue.
