It was supposed to be measured from the center of the axle, which is about 12' on a 13'6" trailer, I know I fit under 12'1" marked clearance. The elevated tracks look higher than those over Lake Street in Chicago. The story behind all trucks over xx must exit was for 1 day of construction, and the signs never came down.

NYC has a no left turn at stop lights fetish, too. I kind of like how they did that around the Detroit area better.

I thought that in NY they posted a lower height clearance to compensate for the worst case scenario of packed snow. I’ve seen 12+ low clearances that are more like 14+. Then there is the standard procedure of compensating for normal height irregularities on the truck and trailer. They used to say in my previous big fleet that the back of trailers have been known to be higher than the front or vice versa. We’re talking about 13’10”. I think it’s reasonable to add at least 6 inches on top of the actual height. Last thing they want is to be sued.

It is old and they just haven’t bothered to take them down. You can run all the way through BK and Queens on 278 and also onto the Grand Central Parkway to the Triboro bridge. They used to make trucks exit onto Astoria Blvd to get to the bridge on ramp but they finally came to their senses on that and realized that was a horrible idea.

It is the all the car service idiots and taxis that are the worst. Most other people drive pretty normally. That being said I don’t miss that place too much and don’t really care if I ever see it again.

And their roads are some of the worst in the nation, and when they fix them, they’re still terrible. They need to hire competent construction companies. Sometimes the traffic cannot advance because the roads won’t allow you. People complain about IN, but not about NYC because they’re roads have apparently always been beat up. Hahaha.

A lot of the signs are completely meaningless. I was doing a local food delivery route and was able to fit under an 11‘11“ bridge between Brooklyn and Queens. It was on the truck route.

But then in Sheepshead Bay, I couldn’t fit under a 12 foot three bridge which was on a truck route also. I stopped before hand to look and see. A cop came up to me in a squad car and was very very cool. He called for back up and they escorted me to back up three blocks and clear traffic out of the way.

A few days ago I went under a couple 13’4” bridges in NJ. I was lucky there was a FedEx behind me, so I waited for him to pass me, and once I saw him go through, I proceeded. Hahaha.

Some spots of NYC the lights had no meaning at night if you had parasites on foot eyeballing you.
