It was supposed to be measured from the center of the axle, which is about 12' on a 13'6" trailer, I know I fit under 12'1" marked clearance. The elevated tracks look higher than those over Lake Street in Chicago. The story behind all trucks over xx must exit was for 1 day of construction, and the signs never came down.
NYC has a no left turn at stop lights fetish, too. I kind of like how they did that around the Detroit area better.

A lot of the signs are completely meaningless. I was doing a local food delivery route and was able to fit under an 11‘11“ bridge between Brooklyn and Queens. It was on the truck route.
But then in Sheepshead Bay, I couldn’t fit under a 12 foot three bridge which was on a truck route also. I stopped before hand to look and see. A cop came up to me in a squad car and was very very cool. He called for back up and they escorted me to back up three blocks and clear traffic out of the way.PE_T Thanks this. -
