If it needs placards then you need the endorsement and HM authority. I would not want to get caught hauling hazmat without the proper authority and endorsement.

If it need placards, it needs authority, insurance, Hazmat Safety Permit, some state permits depending on commodity and state and an endorsement on your CDL. Do you have any idea the fines can run? Got a loose million laying around that you don't need?

I had HM before 9-11 also. Then they changed up the questions when I renewed and I flunked. I said oh well I didn't feel like going through the indignity of being fingerprinted like a common criminal anyway.

I guess I did have HM when I was with LS.

They really lied to you. Generally, you can haul 1000 lbs of relatively harmless hazmat before you need to worry about placards. If you had 4 buckets, I would assume it would be under 1000 lbs. It must have been some nasty s^&t to require placards at that quantity. Hazmat is one of those things that sends up a major red flag at my company. The other posters are correct about the severity of fines. It is also relatively difficult to learn just what is okay to haul without hazmat endorsement, but it is the truckers responsibility. It just isn't worth it.

Even with 4-5 buckets it wouldn't need placarded as most the really toxic stuff (except 1.1 and radioactive) needs placards at 100 gallons.

Still, just write that one off as your lucky card and I wouldn't do it again.

Good for you. I don't see a reason to tarp a forklift unless it has an electric motor that needs to be protected from the elements. My feeling is that if they want something tarped then they should be willing to pay for the additional service.

You may want to pick up a hazmat book at a truck stop. It tells you anything you need to know about hauling hazmat freight. I think they cost about $5.00.

Though it may not of needed placecards. If it's hazmat, it requires a hazmat endoresment.
OOIDA is trying to get that changed but hasn't yet.
