Not all transmissions have the same gear split... you will commonly find the Roadrangers to be the most common but Meritor also still has tens of thousands of their boxes out there, too. And both companies offer many different gear ratios custom spec'd for the original application.

My point is that 3 mph deal is not an industry standard...

    I PASSED!

The DMV tester was really nice, wasn't uptight at all.

Now it's time to start looking for a job.

Any suggested companies good for a newbie?

Since you didn't go the company sponsored route...you have a lot of choices.

First thing to do..sit down and decide what you want to do freightwise..

Reefer, Dry Van, Flated, Tanker or the 4 major categories

Reefer: out in cali you can sit and wait up to 8 hours for a load to be ready..and then there's Walmart DC's

Dry Van..still some waiting on loads..dry goods type food warehouses can take a LOOOOng time at times to get you loaded..

Flatbed: Chaining and tarping in all weather..it was never fun watching a skateboard tugger fighting those tarps in wind..

Tanker..takes a light touch on the throttle and brake to keep those liquid loads nice and calm to keep from having the fillings jarred out of your teeth because it gets to sloshing.

So..once you decide that..then start looking for companies that do what you want to do

Dry Van: US Xpress, Prime, Crete,
Reefer: Stevens, Prime, Southern Refrigerated Transport
    Flatbed: TMC, Mavrick, Prime
Tanker....ummm..Prime is the only one I can think of off the top of my head that will hire a rookie tanker jockey but yu may have one locally..dairy processors might..and milk don't explode.

Once you narrow down the field...hop on hare under the company forums..a few of most company's drivers post on here and will answer questions..also use the FMCSA website to check out company stats...then list choices 1-6 or however many you have..submit apps..contact recruiting offices.

Thanks a lot for that, really helpful post.

I've spent the past few hours applying to most of those places, gotten a few emails back so far. I'm going to call them tomorrow and see what they all have to say. I'm not really too concerned about flatbed/dryvan/tanker(although I'd like to drive flatbed), I just want to get with a company who has the best trainers. I want to learn as much as possible to make sure I get my career started off right, I'm willing to sacrifice my personal preferences for that.

I don't know, what if the milk comes from flammable cows. :biggrin_25523:

but seriously, congrats on passing your test chippy. if anything what about the oil fields? I don't know what all is going on in Virginia, but I applied at several OTR companies and a local place hauling oil and water based mud hired me on and is going to pay for my Haz Mats.

you mean the oil fields down in texas? I'd love to do that, I'm considering moving west...but right now financially I couldn't afford the move. I guess I'm going to have to do some OTR first. I just got a prehire email from Roehl, I'm not sure how legit this "prehire" is, but I'm gonna give'em a call.

Also just got a voicemail from USA Truck. Man, I need to do some research......
