1 week into driving school...

    Alright, well I've done some research. I think I will go with Watkins & Shepherd, US Xpress, or USA Truck. I'm not sure how the hiring process works exactly, but I'm going to do my best with get with either of those three though.

    My first choice though, is B&B trucking, a local route. My uncle has worked for them with quite some time now, I'm trying to get in touch with him and see if he can get me hired and possibly train me himself.

    Soo much to think about right now, hopefully it works out.

    first turn off the engine brake. Second you have to loose ground speed when you downshift.

    Try this, do not downshift to slowdown. slowdown first, drop a gear, say slowdown till your 1200, slide into neutral bring your rpms up to 1600 while maintaining slight pressure on the shifter, tap tha clutch and it should fall into gear.

    brakes are to slow down, keep your engine at the right rpm to pull when you need it to. Jakes are for maintaing a given speed dropping off a hill not stopping or speed shifting.

    thanks for the post, you're just a little late though. i can downshift 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 now(MOST of the time, still make a mistake now and then). Amazing what a few weeks of riding can do.

    Look at small, local companies that will mentor you and give you a chance. If you go to the big guys they will chew you up and spit you out... be patient and don't jump at the first job offer unless it's an exceptional deal.

    Remember if you sign on to an outfit and leave before the first year you will likely get a bad DAC report and that will severely limit your future job opportunities... sucks but it is what it is...

    Geez I don't even do that... no need to really except if you are just practicing (on someone else's truck!)......

    if the B&B thing and Watkins Shepard dont work out for whatever reason, send me a pm or post on this thread. Dont even consider USA truck, USX isnt the worst place to start but you have better options in VA.

    I found an 'independent contractor' for Fedex CC. By independent contract that means owner operator, correct? He said that he's not hired yet, as he needs another driver to go with him. I have my class A but he drives a class B straight truck I believe. Does anyone have any info on this? Or have questions I need to ask before I go talk to the guy in person?
