Not me....Elogs are so much easier. Touch the screen and go. I tend to believe that it isn't whether you run paper or electronic, but how the load is planned. Most of my long hauls, I don't have to set an alarm. I rarely need to rest 10 hrs though.

If 11 hours driving/14 hours on and 70 hours in 8 days isn't enough time to make bank then you're doing something wrong!
Remember the old saying..........."There's a hundred butts waiting to fill that seat!"
Well today there's a hundred seats waiting for your butt!

I couldn't agree more......that's plenty of time to make money. I think the real issue is more so that folks want to have 100 percent control of when they work or sleep....but that's not how life works

Trucker61016, Dockbumper and ZVar Thank this.

Wouldn't bother me if i had to go ELD. Lots of days i don't even hit 10-11hrs total on duty. Work smarter not harder. We got away from logs altogether last fall. Best rule change that ever happened in recent times

My 10s where never just 10 unless I had to stop later than usual, than it would only be 10 to get back on my regular schedule.

Most of the time I go on duty around 3-4 am and park by 3pm.

    Trucker61016 and Dockbumper Thank this.

"As soon as it's legal" means 10 hours AND when the driver is rested. I remember a load in my first year where my 70 ran out at 1400ish. I had hours coming back at midnight, so I shutdown early about 1300 (it's where the truckstop was), started my clock at 2330 ran hard and made OTD by 0700. The next required me to pick up, run a little bit then shut down before noon, then deliver o'dark-thirty. Forget that nonsense. I tend to run 0600-2000, give or take 3 hours. If I run hard on one load, then generally I'll run light on the next to get myself back into 'optimum run time'. Any driver that is shutting down, then running exactly 10 hours later will not have a stable sleep schedule. Some people can run like that, most of us can't - at least not long term.

At my first sit in with Customer Service/Planning I was asked "why won't drivers run overnight to make OTD when they have the hours?" My response was "would you come into work for two hours, then hang out in the break room for 6 hours - unpaid, then work for 8 hours, then hang out in the break room for another 2 hours before working 2 hours, then getting to go home?" Dude was nonplussed. I explained that when I deliver at 0200, odds are I can't pick up until 0700, so I'm 'working' for 4 hours but not getting paid, and that's ignoring the time I 'wasted' waiting for the 0200 appointment time and the struggle to find someplace to wait for 4 hours between 0300 and 0700. The vitriol in my voice surprised me and shocked the heck out of skippy.

From January 2017 to December 2019 I ran an AOBR and an ELD in tandem. In 2018 I ran an semi-functioning AOBR, an ELD, and a Paper Log for three weeks. What I found was that the 11 and 14 don't really influence the paycheck. It's the 70 that really determines a driver's paycheck. On an ELD, if you go on duty at 5:57, you go on duty at 05:57. If you pull out of your spot at 06:10, that's when your drive time starts. on a paper log, the same day is 0600 and 0615. It seems like a minor difference, but in an 8 day period I found a 3 hour difference between an eld and an aobr and a 10 hour difference between an eld and a paper log. Roughly a $10,000 difference in earnings over the course of a year.

I also remember the first time I ran paper logs. It was shortly the story that I told to @Just passing by . I was looking for my shipper and blew past their (unmarked) truck entrance. It was towards the end of my 14 and I distinctly remember the exuberance and liberation I felt when I realized I didn't have to worry if I was a couple minutes over by the time I got turned around.

I do agree that ELDs are easier to run than paper logs, but they are also easier to punish a driver for minor violations that in no way impact safe operation of the vehicle. Does it really matter that I turn my truck around twice to keep the sun off the windshield during a 34 hour restart?

C'mon man! Who says you can't move? PC, yard moves, ELD crawl, etc. Take control of your situation and stop making excuses on why ELD/HOS sucks!
