I think Amsoil makes a great product. They do an exceptional job of marketing. I think they focus a lot more on racing and smaller engines. I love all the testing they do. I wish I had their budget. I think the important thing to do is test the oil in your truck. Amsoil 15w40 might run great for one driver but the Schaeffer does a better job for someone else. I think most of the over the counter oils are very similar but custom lubricant companies can vary widely. They have much more freedom to blend to a specific segment. For example, the cj4 spec requires less zinc and phosphorus because of the catalytic converter on the 07 and up trucks. Everyone with a pre 07 truck will be penalized, but a custom blender can blend it because they don't have the huge production runs.
Truck drivers are packed with all kinds of information. Which engines run better, stronger, more hp. Which fuels give better mileage. Which service shopes treat you right. Take your oil to that level also. Test and monitor. If you can run 100,000 miles or 340,000 miles safely then why not? If one oil works better than another then use it. Look at what Pete is doing. It can done. We have done it lots of time. Just keep in mind that you need a good company to walk through the steps with you. It's not hard but it does take some basic knowledge. Once you start you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.

I agree that Amsoil is a good product even thoug I feel it is overpriced when you compare it to Schaeffer's. But Chris is right about running what fits your operation.

I have been running a harvard filter for 5 years now, i do a complete oil change once a year, not because the oil sampling needs it but because I just can't seem to go until the sampling says it needs it or something happens to a very expencive part of my truck, lol.
I go into speedco every 10,000 miles and have the truck lubed and a sample done and at 20,000 i also have them replace the engine oil filter and fuel filters.
in all these years there has only been one time the sample came out abnormal,it showed slight contamination from coolant, new injector cup seals took care of that problem.
other than that the TBN, wear metals, ect. have always came out normal.
i have to add maybe 1/2 gallon of oil every 10,000 miles and with over 800,000 on the engine I can live with that.
I would recommend the Harvard filter to anyone and i know i will never have a truck without one. -

I am able to get a synthetic blend 15w40 at my local supplier for $9 a gallon delivered to my house (Allied Oil and Supply). It is 40% synthetic and is under their own label, but has similar specs as Shell or Castrol blends. For those wanting to save a few bucks and get a decent oil, check with local oil suppliers for bargains. The bigger name brands are all good, and IMO, Schaeffer probably edges out the others in quality and pricing. But don't overlook regional suppliers that offer quality products at great prices. These outlets are not having to spend money on marketing and sponsoring auto races, so they can provide quality oils at sometimes considerable discounts.
Keep in mind that virtually ALL the base oils in the country are produced by Motiva. Infineum is the largest producer of additive packages. Most of what you see on store shelves is just something spec'd and put together using these two suppliers. With minor variations on the formulations. This is not every case, but most. That being said, a regional blend can be of equal or better quality than anything you will get from a store or truckstop. But you benefit from better pricing.oneshot Thanks this.
