110/120vac Under Bunk A/C Unit Info

    This one is a single hose 8000 btu unit I have had at the house for over 5 years. It doese ok in the Midwest but is underpowered in Texas. I bought a double hose 13k this fall when they went on sale for under $400 IMG_1040.JPG IMG_1029.JPG but have not put it in the truck yet. I run a remote start 3500w champion unit and a motor home inverter/batery charger. IMG_1037.JPG

    I think it is this one? It is a 14000 btu unit. Found it in Oregon on sale for like $360 on sale and no tax so I picked it up. I'll take another look when I get home.

    I use this for heat in the winter. On sale at Walmart for $11 last spring. I don't like running the gen all night just for this so I will be getting a stand alone bunk heater next year I think.

    Generator is $.39 per hour to run over the 800 hours I have run it plus the cost of the unit at $399 shipped to my doorstep. Remote start was the big seller for me.

    The inverter/battery charger is a shore power too. So when I start the gen it automatically switches to the gen and when I shut the gen off it switches back to the battery. When I'm home I just plug it into the house and batteries are fully charged and fridge still running after the weekend.

    I found that unit on Amazon and got the dimensions off the owners manual that I downloaded. It "might" work but it would have to mount sideways in my closet. I would have to make a duct to shoot the cold air out to the side and probably have to remove the door for the closet or at least rehang it so that it opens the other direction.

    Now that I am thinking about it I might be able to cut a decent size hole (to let room air into to closet to be cooled and shot back into the room) in the door and install a grate to cover/dress it up and build a plenum to cover the cold air output and split that into 3 or 4 round ducts at least 2 or 3 of them could blast directly into the bunk area... that may actually work...

    Now my head hurts, (from thinking so much..) LOL.

    Thanks much for the ideas!

    However, all that said, I'm still looking for an underbunk solution, but this one is now at least in the pile of consideration...

    I know I'm going g to regret this as I do not want to derail the topic...

    I already pretty much have the choice of my powerplant down and decided... But, I just looked up the champion generators. They seem to be pretty inexpensive. Cheap enough that once it starts giving a lot of problems it would be easy to just trash it and get a new one.

    So... Tell me about yours. Which model do you have? How long have you had it? How many hours are on it? Problems? Run time on a tank? And very important.. How noisy is it?

    The simple answer is, "Pretty much, yes"

    Not to derail my thread but the long answer is really more of a list of things to consider about your plan...

    (I assume your thinking about a gasoline generator since finding a small suitable diesel that is not uber expensive is all but impossible. )

    1) If mounting the generator in a tool box make sure you can keep it cool and extremely important consider the exhaust.
    2) Keep in mind that DOT requires that the end of any exhaust is NOT under the cab or sleeper. (As a side note, I plan to install a carbon monoxide monitor/alarm in my sleeper just to be safe and sure)
    3) where/how are you going to carry fuel and where/how are you going to obtain that fuel?

    You don't have to answer or discuss those issues here (I just posted them to give you something to think about) but I suppose your certainly welcome to if you like.!

    Very nice and I was actually looking at a split system very much like that earlier today.

    Now that you have jumped in...

    Make and model? How long have you had it? How is it holding up?

    And... How do you power your set up?
