I heard some people use a ddec 5 14L block and throw on a 12.7 ddec 4 head , while deleting all the egr stuff as well. I’m curious as to what the benefits are of doing this?? (More so what are the benefits of swapping the heads)
12.7 head - 14L block

same head other than they use different injectors ddec4 use n2 injectors ddec5 use n3 injectors
spsauerland Thanks this. -
They are NOT the same head.
The valves and combustion gas (air intake) ports are different on the EGR cylinder heads.
The EGR (DDEC 4 & 5) intake manifold will NOT bolt to a pre-EGR head.Last edited: Jan 11, 2021

Ok but using the non egr head and manifold from a non egr 12.7 liter, and installing it on a 14 liter egr engine, ....will it run , i have a 2001 freightliner classicxl 132 12.7 non egr with 2,000,000 miles on it, i also have an 09 freightliner cascadia egr with 900,000 miles on it, trying to marry the two trucks, (build one good one) eliminate the egr and keep the larger cubic inch or liters.... can it be done, i believe both are ddec 4 is the cam shaft the same , for both engines, i have a new turbo and injectors in the 12.7, but the blow buy is evident in high winds...lol, its been a really good engine, but i have the other truck for donation or just put new loaded 12.7 head on 14 liter engine, will it work

Ok question for the knowledgeable, i have a 2001 freightliner classic xl 132 with a 12.7 liter non egr, complete, runs , has 2000000 miles on it blow by is evident in high winds, good engine. But i also have a 2009 freightliner cascadia with 14 liter ddec 4 with egr and cooler, no def, can i reman the 12.7 liter head and install on the 14 liter and using all the manifolds from the 12.7 liter, and 2001 wiring harness with it run?? The 2009 engine 200,000 on reman, but egr cooler started to leak ... i wish to make one good truck from the two...will it work..

It is 100% possible. I've got one in my shop I'm working on now. Depending on which model 14L you're starting with you'll most likely have to have an adapter made for the cam shaft. After that it's pretty straightforward other than some custom programming
spsauerland and Vampire Thank this. -
Delete the 09 and run it as is
jsnell Thanks this. -
Yes can be done no problem. Just need the cam adapter plate they sell online (if using a ddec5 cam) but it’s a 2009 so I’m pretty sure the 09 is ddec 5 not 4. But otherwise that and some custom tuning and you’re good . I know a tuner who could help u out if interested

09 it's probably a ddec6
