So when you put your buddys ECM on did it do the same thing? Crank no start.

Also just going out on a limb here
Is your coolant full? Some detroits depending on how the ECM is configured will not run if low on coolant.

No. At this time, it would run on either. We changed ecm hoping it would make a change in rpm guage. No change, plus it threw a lot of codes. Making me think now that maybe it was ddec 3 but not properly configured

Ok so you need to try a test ecm now it is not running to rule out the ecm.
Dont pay attention to codes , your just trying to decifer if it's the ecm causing the no start condition

My buddy is very hard to catch. In town hoping to catch him but I can not think of anything else to do other than start testing sensors and at some point if everything else seems to be ok, start trying to check the wiring from ecm to injectors I don't have these schematics.

If you cant find a good ECM you can send yours to diesel control service. They will test it and tell you what is wrong with it.

Never mind just read your next post. Get another ecm to try is your next move.

    I don't know anything about priming a 12.7.

However, this is the way I have gone about it with other engines.

Hopefully on the bottom of the tank there's a ball valve to shut the fuel off. At that point you can disconnect the line that runs up to the pump and put a check valve where it goes back into the ball valve. Get a pump and prime it right up through that check valve to the pump. The check valve will hold the fuel their hook your line back up and open up your ball valve and you are primed from the tank to the pump.

If you don't want to do a lot of cranking the engine, take the line off that runs to the Head. Put your own return line on if you need to. Take your pump and now prime it right through the head until you see it clearly come out the return line.

Hook your lines back up and the truck should start with a half a turn.

I didn't particularly mean it to solve the Op's problem, I despise electronic engines for exactly that reason. I meant it more as a general guideline to how you prime an engine for anyone interested.

I find it sickening to watch someone cranking and cranking and cranking and cranking an engine, rather than just prime it.
