Went and looked at a 2000 International 9400 today with a 12.7. Had about 660k on the clock been working an easy life pulling US Mail its' whole life at 54k lbs and yet it still had a ton of blow-by, smoke was wafting out from under the truck at idle. Clean truck otherwise but it was a little short for what I need (205" WB) and the price was right but the blowby was just too much for me to feel comfortable with. The truck didn't look neglected, I was little surprised to say the least, makes me wonder about these 12.7's a little more.

Detroit has always had a reputation for oil leaks. Some of the series 60's had a problem with oil leaks on the front of the engine. I think there was a gasket around the cam that was the culprit. Blow by may or may not be an indication of something serious going on with the motor. If it is a truck that you are interested in buying you could always hook up a computer and have a dyno done to check it out.

It all depends on who had it, how they drove it and how well it was maintained.

I drove one thy had 1.35 million miles and ran perfect. My 99 had only 350k on a crate motor but for the 7 years I owned it I never had to replace anything on the motor but the water pump and the belts right at the end before I traded it off.

Maybe that detroit was just never run in properly.
I spent 10 years working on large fishing trawlers at sea. I have a good idea of diesels and how to keep them going. Not too many places to get a mechanic at sea! We all knew how to turn a wrench and keep machinery running. I have operated caterpillars, volvos , cummins , perkins and even ran a boat with a rolls royce engine! Best thing for a diesel is to work it under a load, nothing ##### them quicker than running them at light loads all the time . The fact that it ran under light loads it whole life may not necessarily be the best thing.

Yup, when the car salesman tries to sell you the Buick that little old lady drove 5 miles a day and is in 'perfect' shape, run away. The fuel and oil systems are buggered, same with a big diesel, they need to be run.

Funny you should say that because last fall I bought a 1999 Lesabre at an estate auction that only had 51,000 miles. The car was mint and ran great. Then after 2 weeks I had to have the transmission flushed, all 4 struts changed and new tires. Go figure lol
