Howdy guys. 2000 freightliner classic with 1999 12.7l Detroit tied to a 13 speed road ranger. I'm still fairly new to Detroits and I have read of people with similar issues on here but not quite the same. Truck runs great with zero issues after the first morning take off. Doesn't use oil, doesn't push/use coolant, shoot doesn't even really leak oil. Anyways after the truck sits overnight and is dead cold it starts up really fast no issues. Idle sounds normal. I typically let it run for 15-30 mins before I leave. Once I go to leave truck will break up pretty bad in the lower gears at 1500-1700 rpm. It acts like the fuel has air in it. Oh also one singular time when I was powering through the breakup it did shoot a fire ball out the stacks. 99% of the time after I drive the few miles to the highway it won't do it anymore. Does it at all fuel tank levels, engine isn't losing any prime. I do have two more fuel lines I want to replace but they don't really look bad and don't leak fuel. All the rest are new. Fuel pump is pretty new, maybe 50k miles. Has the factory davco 382. If this was my n14 I would assume it had an injector that needed replaced. But those are known for that. One thread I read on here with the closest to this condition his intake air temp sensor wires were grounding out, but I don't have that issue. Once the engine is warmed to operating temp up it will almost never exhibit this conditon. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Fuel lines don't have to leak to suck air.

If you're able to run a test overnight, run a line straight from the pump and drop it into a pretty full tank. Prime it and let it run a bit, then take it for a drive.

Bring it back and let it set overnight, then start it and drive like you normally do. See if the stumble is gone.

My money is on air in the fuel. Do your suction and return lines have that POS shutoff valve assembly thing that Freightliner used for a while?

It sure feels like air....I gotta replace these last two lines. Hopefully will have time this weekend. And no I deleted that stupid shut off thing under the cab. I already did the super long lines from the tanks to up behind the engine. I thought they were the issue cause they were in absolutely terrible condition. They might have been original to the truck.

Good. Yeah, the one from the back of the engine to the splitter is return. It can't get air in from there, though the check valve can cause it lose prime.

And obviously, the lines from the splitter to the tanks are return, so don't worry about those.

Yep! One of the lines left is the feed up to the head. I initially thought it looked pretty good but when I was looking closer it has some cracking and stuff on the outside of the hose. Also it is some kinda weird style hose anyways. I was initially going to replace it just because how it looks lol. Only thing I have seen comparable is when we made hydraulic hoses at home as a kid. We used a machine I don't remember the name of anymore but it has a distinctive collar around the fittings. Hopefully have time to get to car quest Saturday I like the hoses they make.

Oddly enough I’ve driven 3 cascadia that sputter around 150 to 160 degrees of water temperature if I start at a lower or high temperature no sputter. Have you tried warming it up less to see if it’s temperature related.. also had a 98 fld 500 hp series 60 that sputtered in the morning it turned out to be corrosion on the blue fuse in the battery box.. just some other ideas to check most likely air related like you’re thinking though..

Thanks I'll check both. I haven't opened those fuses on this truck so that would probably be great to check.

Might as well take the grounds off frame near the battery box. Clean everything and re install. There’s a few wires, small one is the ECM ground. Very common to lose ground. I don’t think that’s the problem. Never know. My Truck does the same thing, since Overhauling. It’s sucking air somewhere. Replaced fuel lines that were disturbed. Replaced check valve. Changing filters helps. Mine loses prime also. I’ve heard of fine cracking on filter housing, otherwise everything that’s been mentioned already. Seems to be a common problem. Got me aggravated.

I am changing my lines today. So we will see. They are damp with diesel even though they don't look obviously cracked or anything. If you have that stupid davco mine had a piece of dirt holding the check ball open and that was making it lose prime. I had that problem awhile ago.

The lines from tanks need to be on a continuous rise, to avoid losing siphon in low spots.
