Can a 12-volt cooler (plugged into a cigarette plug outlet) cause an ecu or starter failure?
12 volt cooler=ecu, starter failure?

No,

A Volvo service writer insists it was the cooler and not the battery terminals. First for the ECU, then for the starter. I'm in the Twilight Zone here!
-
The low voltage disconnect should have kicked in.
Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
Which Volvo are you at?

If you leave the cooler going on batteries until they drain to less than a particular voltage available, it will brick everything in that truck. No start. Don't be doing that.

That's not it. I just got unloaded, had 13+ volts. No start. ECU failed as I drove down the road. He's telling my boss the cooler caused this stuff with full batteries--believe it or not.
-
After they "fixed" the ECU, issue started recurring. I found loose battery terminals. They just stole my cooler and never even checked the terminals!
25(2)+2 and Dave_in_AZ Thank this.
