Correct me if I'm wrong, but the fact that you can't pre-select the splitter on an RTO shouldn't necessarily mean you must use the clutch to shift. I would think it would be easier to just float the gears from high split to high split (11th to 13th), then split down (to 12th). Am I missing something?

Yes, it's lazy, but some of us would like to avoid having a Lou Ferrigno left leg with a David Spade right leg. :biggrin_25523:

See, this is what I'm talking about. Classic prime example.
Sure you can do it while floating the gears. Will it work, sure. But it would work better if you used your clutch. And would eliminate any possible risk of not fully completing a shift and possible shock load damage down the road.

Watch the video, it clearly states , Double clutch!! There's a reason for this and it's not because they want you to exercise your leg mussels. This is how to correcly shift.

How do you figure you were shifting it right. You clearly said you don't use your clutch.
Plus you were pre selecting your compound shifts. Big no,no with a RTO. That's why it was grinding and you had to start over.

Sure, but that's all true of any (manual) truck transmission, not specific to an RTO. Everyone knows double clutching, or at least using the clutch to go into gear, is better for the transmission, and helps ensure it goes completely in gear.

Everyone also knows that "shifting correctly" is a huge PITA, which is why most of us don't do it. It's laziness, not ignorance.

just one mans opinion is all any of it is
correct shifting of a 13 speed transmission whether it is from
    1982 or 2002
doesn't have to do anything with double clutching
if you cant float at the right rpm you cant double clutch properly either
everything done incorrectly wears out components

Sure, it's kind of ironic that double clutching while shifting perfectly means that using the clutch served no purpose. But it's also true that most of us don't shift perfectly every time, or even most of the time, and using the clutch would soften the blow of those slightly imperfect shifts.

That being said, laziness is a powerful motive, and I use the clutch only to get the truck rolling. And occasionally when I have to slow way down unexpectedly while my right hand is occupied with a Mountain Dew.

I think that if you are a competent driver, you can do just fine shifting this truck without the clutch. I had this trans in an 80 Ford Louisville that I bought new. I never had a problem shifting it clutchless, and did a fair bit of off road hauling with it, soft roads, hills, and all. I did use the clutch sometimes on hills, or making a fast jake shift on soft roads. Because, like swaan says, you don't want to get it only part way in and then root on it. Another technique you can use sometimes, is a partial clutch shift, when you slip it into neutral without the clutch, sync your rpms with the throttle, clutch, and into gear.
Some of the shifts have to be lightning fast or you come to a grinding halt in a hurry. With time you will figure out what works best for you. Have fun!
