Let's clear a few things up here first:

    1) i thought that any/every ticket is and always was a "criminal charge." Speeding etc. even in your own car. A misdemenor, but nevertheless a "criminal charge." If you don't get convicted, it doesn't go on your "record." This is the way i understand it at least from where i'm from, which i don't feel differs too much from other states.

    2) Recently a few (new jersey comes to mind) states might be taking log book violations more seriously and if a fatality results from driving over the hours, then prison time may result. In addition, mere violations of hours of service may result in real still and thus more "criminal" charges?

Download the FMCSA's "Interstate truck drivers guide to hours of service". It explains HOS and logbooks. What most people do not realize is that logbooks are no longer just about commercial drivers and motor carriers. There are now HOS rules for Non-cdl drivers and non-motor carrier operations including logbook and HOS rules for private individual's as well. When the FMCSA said the final rule would include a major change to HOS they were not kidding. For an over all understanding of federal regulations find and download "DOT Order 1500.11" and read the referenced regulations.

You can drive 13 3/4 hours in a 24 hour period. Start at midnight, drive 11, stop for 10, 15 minute pre-trip, drive 2 3/4 hours til midnight.

Just look it up before you start disagreeing. I did a long time ago. I have always pushed the limits and never got a ticket. The cops always look through my book and tell me to have a good day.

A CMV is a vehicle over 10,000 lbs. GVWR used for commercial purpose . Drivers are subject to HOS and have been for years . This is nothing new .
