Just a bit of (what I think is) interesting history on The Eisenhour Tunnel. It started life as the Straight Creek Tunnel. They started on both ends, and met in the middle. I worked with a fella that had been an inspector on that job. Since it was a state and federal project, there was a bit of a problem with "equal opportunity." The engineering outfit hired a couple of women inspectors.
Immediately upon their showing up underground, once the word found it's way around, all those old hard rock miners walked off the job. Seems that an old superstition said something about if a woman goes into a mine, people are going to die, or something similar to that.
That was the story as I got it from Vince, the guy I worked with. I do see that Wikipedia has a bit of a different take on it, so who knows.

I drive through there at least 100 times a year I've never been short of breath or anything of the sort.
Of course, my body has rarely been below 4500'.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
The top of old Loveland Pass is almost 12000 feet. The tunnel is lower. I was born and raised in Colorado, but since moving away, have found myself short of breath at the rest area just east of the tunnel. Haven't been there since 2004, and likely won't be any time soon. But I used to love the run from St. George to Denver and back. Summer or winter.
I remember when they put I-70 through the Colorado River Canyon, east of Glenwood Springs. Sort of had mixed emotions on it, as I had some very fond memories of that canyon when I was growing up...Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
6 isn't a bad road. Many miles logged on it.rachi Thanks this.

I had one of the worst toothaches / abscess tooth in the history of the world going over that once. Some of the worst most tormented pain of my life. When I got to the T/A in Denver my face was literally fire truck red, looked just like I had an egg stuck under my skin near my chin.Knucklehead and rachi Thank this.

So if i stay in the middle on I-25 i wont hit em"?

No, the far left shoulder is like 13'8" and the far right is like 13'10" my GPS always freaks out when rolling south through there. Idunno where you're going, but if you're going south of downtown, you can use 6th ave (US 6). If you're going north of downtown, stay on I70. Speer Blvd overpass is an out dated arch.rachi Thanks this.

The middle two lanes are 15'2"rachi Thanks this.

If you go Loveland Pass, you better be on your game.
I recall Eisenhower Tunnel Well, and it has active defenses against over height vehicles.
One other tidbit about Eisenhower most people don't realize. It sits on a fault and contains approximately 900 feet of hexagonal joints on each wall of the tunnel you are in. So when there is a quake, the joints should keep everything open long enough to get people out.RockinChair, albert l, Big Don and 1 other person Thank this. -
Avoid I25 in Denver altogether. If you're going south of Denver, you'd just shoot C470 (the non-toll side) to 25. Much quicker than taking 70 across to 25, and considerably less traffic… 25 always logjams and people here can't drive for ####.
