Or drive in Canada where we get 13 hours :)

And I've yet to EVER run into a trucker whose log books are 100% accurate and truthful - it just doesn't seem to happen and EVERYONE knows it exists but ignores it. Everyone seems to rewrite things and expand a bit and delete a bit - that seems to be the only way to survive these days in the trucking industry.

I thought in Canada you followed the same rules as USA except that during a 24 hour period you could only work 13 hours.

They're almost the same but at least you can go a bit further in a day with 13 hours rather than 11.

In Canada, you're allowed 70 hours in seven days. In the USA, you're only allowed 70 hours in eight days.

Also, I believe you're allowed to split the 10 hour break into five and five up here in Canada but I'm not sure.

It's a 36 hour reset here for your hours but, in some places, I believe it's 24 but I'm not 100% sure on that one, either.

They're TRYING to make it uniform across the board in North America but Canada won't give in for the hours of driving in the day as well as a few other things.

Up here in Canada, it's still very unclear exactly what the rules are because some officials tell you one thing and another tells you something else. I believe they're more strict in the USA but TOS is still, to most people, somewhat confusing on some points.

In the USA, I have logged up to 13.5 in a day when running hard.

I run Canada alot and know about the difference in restart and the reset periods.

Under the current rules you can only use an 8/2 hour split. This means you MUST go to the sleeper berth for 8 consecutive hours. This will "freeze" your 14 hour clock meaning you can extend the 14 hour work window by 8 hours. You must take 2 additional (consecutive)hours either in the sleeper berth or off duty later on.
Since the rule change this so called split really isnt worth bothering with. It doesnt give you a fresh 11 hour driving period nor does it give you a fresh 14 hour work window. So if your going to stop for 8 hours you might as well finish 2 more hours and keep it simple.
Its important for you to understand you can drive 11 hours within a 14 hour time frame. You may work 24 hours a day 7 days a week and not be in violation so long as you do not "drive."

For illustration purposes only: A driver begins his work shift at midnight. Does a pretrip for 15 minutes he drives 11 hours straight. It is now 1115 am. The driver takes his 10 hour break and "resets both his 11 hour driving time frame and has a new 14 hour work frame." The time is now 2115. The driver continues driving for another 11 hours straight. In essence the driver has driven 13.75 hours in his first 24 hour period.

This example was to illustrate how a 14 hour work window can be different each day and maximize your legal driving hours. In reality you will have to stop occassionally for food, bathroom breaks, fueling, showering, loading/unloading, and possible dot inspections.

the second sleeper berth time to 8 straight hours it would be ok. the way you're showing it, you can't drive again unless you would have stayed in the sleeper for 6 more hours OR just take 10 straight hours off duty. If you extended the sleeper to 8 hours, you could only drive 5 hours before you would need at least 2 hours in the sleeper again. You must take at least 8 hours on one of the sleeper splits. You are allowed to combine the other 2 hours in the sleeper with off duty time.... example: you take 8 hours in sleeper......you drive 5 hours.... now you must show 2 hours in the sleeper or you can show 1 hour in sleeper and 1 hour off duty.

If you don't get confused by my posting, it's a miracle because I'm getting dizzy myself.

I was having some problems with this too.....after being local for the last 13 years....

Bought Drivers Daily Log program.....you would have to be an idiot to get ANY violations using this program if you have it set up right!

    Love it.....worth every penny.....well...DOLLAR!

you must show at least 8 hours in the sleeper for one segment of the split. The remaining two hours can be shown either off duty , in the sleeper, or a combination of both...but it must be consecutive in order for it to count towards your 10 hours. In other words, you can't take one hour in the sleeper, then drive, then take the last hour in the sleeper. You have to take those two hours all at once. You still can't drive 11 hours after this because even though the split equals 10 hours, those 10 hours weren't consecutive since you drove in between. You can only drive 11 hours after 10 straight hours off duty or in the sleeper.

If there are any team drivers out there they can probably explain it a lot better than I can. It's all a matter of numbers and adding and subtracting to be sure you don't go over on your allotted hours.
