I was running the overhead on my truck. Didn't have it pulled all the way in just the nose. I was in a hurry to load feeders for west Texas out of west plains.

At first I thought the first plane was an accident, and the second was rubber necking and hit the other side. Bear in mind I couldn't fathom any one coming on U.S soil and killing innocent people. When I woke up to reality, I knew it wouldn't be long and I would be in the desert. I was in the guard at the time. Couple years before they really amped our training up called us an enhanced brigade. We had already done a peace keeping mission in Egypt. Sent us to Ft. Hood to train. It was off to Baghdad with the 7th. The mass panic, amazed me. I went and picked my kids up from school took them fishing. I knew it wouldn't be long, I thought they may need a good memory from it all.

I was working in a factory, with no radio near us, I'd talk to the other crew and get bits of the news that didn't really make sense.
After work I went to the grocery to get lunch meat, the store was packed, and I had to wait in line a long time, I told them all they were crazy, an office building got hit, not a food warehouse.

I was in 9th grade, getting ready for school.

At the time, I understood a lot of people died and that was about it. Didn't even know what a World Trade Center was.

I was 18. I was heading to ivy tech state college to square everything up and get in classes. I had an old truck at the time with terrible radio reception. I wondered why there was no music on the radio, but I couldn't tell what everyone was talking about. I found it odd that EVERY station was talk, no music.

I got to the admin building and walked in to see everyone crowded around a small tv that was up on top of the fridge in the break room. I stood there long enough to see the second plane hit.

I hopped in the truck, drove that poor truck as fast as it would go 35 minutes back home, armed myself with a few pea shooters then went to mom and dads. dad was locked down at work and mom was watching history unfold on tv. I called off work. all day, next to my mother, there I sat...shotgun in hand, rifles on my back and small arms anywhere I could put them. my gf at the time (now exwife) was chasing a law degree at school 2 hours away, she made it to my parents house in 40 minutes. never returning to that school.

I had just come off of home time. Scheduled to pick up a load of fiberglass insulation in Lanet, AL, about 180ish miles from home. The load was going to Blaine, MN. Was listening to Sirius Satellite Radio and was in Opelika, AL, almost at the shipper, and like others have said, I thought it was a small Piper Cub type aircraft. When the 2nd aircraft hit the towers, I immediately called my wife and told her to start watching the news, something bad is happening to our country.

The load worked out ok, made it to Minnesota without much of a problem, but I have always regretted not turning around and going back home, because I was still close (150ish miles).

I appreciate everyone taking the time to share their memories of that day. Most of my friends are not drivers and most rarely even leave the local community, so hearing everyone's stories from mostly drivers is refreshing.

People go nuts at the least litte thing. What will they do with 500 gallons of spoiled milk?
One grocery store owner I know even said how stupid so many of his customers are. He bought several pallets of gallon bottles of cooking oil and jacked the price up. Put a sign on the oil, "Due to the crisis, there will be an oil crisis, so buy now while it's cheap." He sold all of it in one day at 3 or 4 times the normal price.

Not only is that highly illegal (price gouging) it's utterly immoral.

He wasn't actually price gouging because there was no shortage of cooking oil. In stupid peoples minds they related that to what they heard on the news about Middle East crude.
One guy in Tennessee bought a tractor trailer load of bottled water and sold it for about $25.00 a case on the side of the road when it was selling in grocery stores for about $2.50 a case. He sold all of it!
Remember all those idiots that gave away all their belongings, bank accounts, property and stood in the yard waiting for a space ship to pick them up and take them to another planet? At the same time 39 website designers at one company had themselves castrated, then packed a suitcase and drank poison because their boss told them a spaceship was hiding behind a comet that was passing close to earth and would stop and get them. This happened in San Diego,CA.
This was not too long ago. Google : Heaven's Gate

This day gets pushed aside just like December 7th does. Thousands of Americans lost their lives on both days yet the media somehow does not want to remind us. You do not hear anything about Pearl Harbor day nor September 11th.

I was at work and just about to leave on a repair call when it came across the radio. I went back inside and we turned on the television. We actually saw the second plane fly into the other tower.

I remember a chill going down my spine and anger creep into my gut. It is still there to an extent although it has grown less with the passage of time. But I will vow to always remember that day

I was in 7th grade sitting in English class and the teacher turned the tv on so we can see what was going on. Then we got sent home early that day.
