Probably easiest to let the old man walk us through it, though its been a long time for him.
I am hoping that the lady gets a hold of me that sold the KT450 truck out from under me when they go to clean out the building there on the property, there were 1967 and 1971 K100s setting in there, the 1693 would be perfect for one of those.

A 1693 was its own engine, nothing close to it but a 1673 was in the same family OK

The only engine you may get lucky with in parts is a 1673, same family, less horsepower OK

If you have the money and time to play with a new modern electronic engine in an old school truck you have the money and time to keep it all old school. I would put up a tricked turned up 1693 with air to air to any thing they have today. Back then in the day you had to be a truck driver not someone who held a steering wheel and drove a truck. The 1673 was a 275-325 horse and the 1693 was at factory settings 375-425 hp. You could go to 650 hp and if you paid attention you would not hurt it.

Is the D343 not the off-road version of the 1693 on-road engine? D343 had no spacer plate but didn't it have a fair amount of internal parts in common?

To Blackpipes: I can really dig what you have to say about the sound of a 1693 T/A. And with a handle like Blackpipes you can relate here. I had to be careful changing gears and getting back into it at bothsides of the Eisenhower Tunnel east bound and west bound. I would get enough black smoke that I would set off the lights and sirens from the overheight sensors. This is the first good pull west of Denver on I-70.
